Reviews of new vintages by Adrian van Velsen

The Swiss wine writer wrote about Heumann wines about a year ago and now he tasted himself through the recent vintages of the wines of the Villány estate. The wines are rated between 87 and 94 points. You might say, another critic who lives on high scores, but with Adrian van Velsen this is not the case.

Adrian van Velsen, owner of vvWine.ch is absolutely independent, his income does not depend on his wine reviews in any way. Wine is a passion for him, though a serious one, he dedicates time and energy to write some of the most detailed, comprehensive and enjoyable reviews of the world. No wonder his reviews are available on Wine Searcher as well and he is considered to be one of the most influential wine critics of Europe. I am lucky enough to know Adrian van Velsen personally, it was Erhard Heumann, owner of the estate, who recommended his reviews first. Later I was part of the team organizing Hungarian Wine Summit, his precious articles occurred to me so invited him to participate and thank God he could arrange his schedule to come to Hungary, just like in November 2022 to participate in Franc & Franc conference in Villány. This January I went on a family holiday to Bordeaux. It was Adrian who recommended an estate, the only one located within the city of Bordeaux. He quoted his accurate reviews of this winery (Château les Carmes Haut-Brion) and commented that he had recognized the merits of the estate much earlier than his fellow wine critics. I visited the estate, it was amazing – and later I could see Adrian van Velsen’s points on the fact sheets of the wines next to James Suckling and alike. So, dear readers, forgive me for the longer introduction, but I felt the need to explain how priceless these points are below…

Heumann SMS – a message you would love to receive

At this latest tasting Adrian van Velsen gave the highest scores to the 2017 and 2018 vintages of La Trinità Villanyi Franc Premium (93 and 94 points). We have already presented these wines and mentioned several times, however, we have not introduced Heumann SMS yet, a blend of Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah (hence the abbreviation). Let us quote the Swiss wine writer about Heumann SMS 2017: “Dark burgundy. The nose is still clearly marked by the aging, intense toasted notes, charred wood, brown bread, cherries, cassis, ethereal notes, pepper, very complex and constantly changing with air. Ripe fruit on the palate, strong, distinctive tannin structure, very fine acidity, the wood seems much better packaged than the nose suggests, together with the ripe fruit it forms a beautiful harmony. Very long finish. Excellent quality, still allowed to mature. 2024-2035, 92 vvpoints“
