Good things in Moscow: Heimann & Sons wines
Hungarian wines at Lion Wines Russian distributing company
Lion Wines is a Moscow based, relatively small distributing company selling wines to the HoReCa sector. Recently Sergey Smolin has been placed in charge of the Eastern European portfolio, which is good news: Sergey is undoubtedly the most knowledgeable Russian wine professional regarding the recent Hungarian wine scene. His book about Hungarian wineries might be the most comprehensible ever written in any languages on the topic. At the moment 5 wines are available at Lion Wines from Heimann & Sons estate in Szekszárd. Soon more Hungarian wines will be available also from Etyek, Tokaj, Villány, Somló – as Sergey told us when describing his and one of Lion Wine co-owner’s recent short but busy trip to Hungary.

Bati Kereszt Kékfrankos 2018
One of the wines available at Lion Wines is the 2018 vintage of this special, single vineyard Kékfrankos wine. In Hungary 2020 vintage is available, but Russian winelovers should consider themselves lucky to taste the 2018 vintage which received high scores from several renowned experts: JancisRobinson.com: 17.5 p, WineAnorak.com: 94 p, Vinography.com: 9–9.5.
As for the vineyard, Zoltán Heimann Junior says the following: “Among all our Kékfrankos plantings Bati Kereszt is the most protected plot where ripening and harvest are delayed by 2-3 weeks compared to other vineyards. The prolonged growing season adorns the wines with typically delicate, floral aromas.”
