Andreas Larsson Best Sommelier of the World about Sauska Furmint 2020
Soon winelovers of the whole world will learn the name of our flagship white varietal. Furmint comes into fashion due to its great potential, its inevitable merits and due to the decent job our winemakers do. Sauska estate in Tokaj produces crystal clear Furmint wines every year, and vintage 2020 was a good year with warm, sunny August and September. Hand harvested, hand sorted berries were briefly cold-soaked and pressed. Fermented in stainless steel (18–20 C) using indigenous yeast. Sur lie ageing for 2 months in stainless steel. The wine is not a single vineyard wine, but a blend of three vineyards – which were all chemical free by 2020. Sauska Furmint 2020 received 91 points from Andreas Larsson, the Swedish born world champion sommelier.
“Pale straw colour with a green hue. Pure nose showing discreet fruit, rather a mineral/flinty nose with fine notes of lemon zest, wild herbs and white fleshed fruit. Very good grip on the palate, fine substance and extract adding freshness, youthful texture with discreet notes of citrus, nori and fresh hazelnut. Long and mouthwatering finish with a saline feeling. Youthful and restrained but good depth.” And the good news: it costs only 2950 HUF in retail (8.5 euros).
