Babarczi Vineyard and Wine Cellar

Babarczi Vineyard and Wine Cellar is a family owned winery managed by the second generation at present. The estate is situated in one of the smallest wine region of Hungary, Pannonhalma wine region, which may be tiny, but its history is even the longer. The wine region is close to the city of Győr, located on the edge of Small Plain, on the last sections of Sokoró hills that belong to Bakony mountains.

The first steps leading towards founding the estate were made in 1980, when the first vines were planted in the garden of the family house in the town of Győrújbarát. This garden was  3.000 square metres! And were planted with Ezerfürtű and Cserszegi Fűszeres. The following four decades were spent with smaller or bigger steps to increase the estate, and as a result now the Babarczy family cultivates 65 hectares.

The vineyards lie mainly in the communes of Győrújbarát and Tényő, but besides they cultivate 5-5 hectares in Győrszemere and Pannonhalma, in the latter the plantations are in the famous ’Széldomb’ (’Windhill’) vineyard.

The winery started an overall plantation renewing process in 2009, and thanks to this by now they have more then 40 hectares of newly planted, modern vineyard. The replacement of the vines is still going on in the following years to establish a firm base for the future development of the estate.

The „backbone” of the winery consist of the grape varieties Rhine Riesling, Olaszrizling and Müller Thurgau, and these are supplemented by Irsai Olivér, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Cserszegi Fűszeres.

The vineyard made a great step ahead in 2002, when they introduced gentle vinification and reductive technology. This is the year when the new estate centre was established in Győrújbarát, in the neighbourhood of the city of Győr. According to the legend the main building of this estate centre was built from bricks from the castle of Győr, which was demolished by the Turkish troops.

The aim of Babarczi family is to establish a winery – with hard work, the whole family together – which will thrive for generations, is able to renew from time to time, develops dynamically and can reflect the unique characteristics of the region through the wines made here every year.

This wine is a unique exciting blend of the peachy acidity and lightness of Müller Thurgau, the spicy aromas of Pinot Gris and Irsai Olivér’s perfumed, elderflower notes. Fine bubbles caress the palate, while its fragrant fruit character and lively acidity make this wine the refreshing drink of the summer.

Pannonhalmi Irsai Olivér 2019

Pale yellow colour. Medium intense nose with elderberry, white flowers and citrus notes. Refreshing, gentle acidity combined with a palate reminiscent of the aromas of the nose. Light body, spicy tones. A crispy, juicy, light wine typical of the variety.

Pannonhalmi Sauvignon Blanc 2019

A supple, medium-bodied, elegant wine with a refreshing balanced nose reminiscent of elderflower, nettle and white-fleshed fruit. Its delightful lemon crispness and firm acidity awakens your taste buds, softened with hints of peach and tropical fruit. It lingers extensively on the palate.

Pannonhalmi Chardonnay 2019

The fruit for this Chardonnay comes from a vineyard called Baron Hill, one of the best vineyards of Győrújbarát with the most potential. Its nose and palate reflect freshness and fruitiness, but the characteristic mineral notes are also present. Pear, apple and floral tones pair with zesty acidity. Ideal with fish plates, but perfect in itself as well.

Pannonhalmi Rajnai Rizling 2019

The Pannonhalma vineyards reserve a small select area for this grape originating from the Rhine region, now of international popularity. A wine of strong character, it naturally draws attention to itself with its well balanced refreshing levels of acidity and fleshy palate.

Pannonhalmi Kékfrankos Rozé 2019

This rosé is made of 100% Kékfrankos. It perfectly displays the characteristics of the variety and reflects the terroir of Pannonhalma wine region both on the nose and on the palate. Intense strawberry and raspberry notes lifted by the vivacious, medium acidity.
