Breaking news: the Best White Wine of CMB is Hungarian!
Kancellár SomlAI 2021
By Ágnes Németh
I regularly judge at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, therefore I have first-hand experience about the rigorous nature of the contest. Compared to many other competitions, it is really hard to get medal, especially gold medal – only 30% of the entered wines can get medals, and it is not only written in press releases, it is a fact. This year 40 Hungarian wines entered CMB and 27 of them won medals: 2 Grand Gold, 13 gold and 12 silver medals. With more than 2/3 medal winners, Hungary has done well above the average! What is more, Kancellár SomlAI 2021 has been chosen the best of the 2400 entered white wines of the contest! Let us introduce Kancellár SomlAI 2021, the White Wine Revelation and let us explain why it is called SomlAI.
SomlAI – not only a pun
When a wine comes from the volcanic Somló, our smallest wine region, in Hungarian we can say it is ‘somlói’ or, in a bit rural or archaic way we can say it is ‘somlai’. However, the capital letters ‘AI’ clearly refer to Artificial Intelligence, with reason. It is a result of a pioneering experience: the owner’s son entered all the data of the grapes in ChatGPT, and the programme responded with 22 pages, giving instructions regarding the proportion of the wines in the blend. The result is a Furmint-based blend with Hárslevelű, Juhfark and a hint of Cserszegi Fűszeres.
Tasting note: “Straw yellow colour, appealing, fresh nose. Linden flower, tropical flowers and citrus fruits are abundant and coexist in harmony. Medium body, mineral notes and refreshing, white flesh fruits on the palate. The finish is zesty and youthful as well. Blended by AI and aged in bottle by us.” The wine won gold medal at Berliner Wine Trophy 2025 as well.
2000 bottles are still available, if you are interested, contact Gyula Bertalan export manager!
Also, there is a Juhfark-based version of the blend, the same vintage, of this 13 000+ bottles are available.
Kancellár won 6 (!) medals at CMB altogether: 1 Grand Gold, 2 gold and 3 silver medals.
