Christmas bonbons with Frittman red wine filling
… and Tiara, a majestic new release Bordeaux blend
In Hungary we traditionally decorate our Christmas trees with a special candy or bonbon called “szaloncukor” (‘saloon candy’). These are usually chocolate covered bonbons of different flavours, wrapped in white paper and in a shiny, colourful foil on the paper. Since 2020 there has been a Christmas bonbon contest in Hungary, and this year a winery is involved: the second best delicacy in the professional category is a raspberry and red wine flavoured Christmas bonbon made with Frittmann wine!
The best of the sweets
The contest was created by two bloggers, and since there are more than 150 brands of the sweets in Hungary, every year the jury tastes altogether around 5000 Christmas bonbons! There are different categories, this year you can find the following categories on the contest website (in Hungarian, so here we go with the translation):
– The Christmas Bonbon of the Year
– The Professional Category of Christmas Bonbons
– Children’s Favourite
– The Christmas Jelly of the Year
– The Best Flavour Inspired Christmas Bonbon
– The New Flavour of the Year

Tiara, a newly released red beauty
The protagonist of our cover photo was created by a confectionary in the town of Soltvadkert, where Frittmann Winery is located. Frittmann is the leading winery in Kunság wine region with having awarded both of the two most prestigious titles: Winemaker of the Year (2007) and Winery of the Year (2015). The estate focuses on indigenous grape varieties like Ezerjó, they even make a bottle fermented sparkling wine of the variety. The aromatic varieties are also favoured, like Cserszegi Fűszeres and Irsai Olivér. The winery is keen on experimenting, using resistant grapes like Generosa and Nero. The range includes wines of international grapes as well, like Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignonand others. A new release called Tiara, a rich, layered, complex Bordeaux blend. “Tiara is all about time. There are two key ingredients in making it successful: one is an outstanding vintage, allowing for a long ripening period, the other is two years of barrel ageing.“
