Furmint wines in the USA by Danch & Granger

Prepare for Furmint February!

We have an easy job to promote Furmint February this time! Let us quote from the latest newsletter of Eric Danch and Catherine Granger, owners of the California based Danch & Granger Selections importing company of artisan and natural wines: “… we’re fairly certain that Furmint is horribly suited to be a global brand like Cabernet or Chardonnay. (…) And while we’re not usually big fans of marketing gimmicks, there has been one that’s proven to be fun, educational, and mutually successfulFurmint February.”

Eric and Catherine have a stunning selection of “memorable wines” from the “New Old World” of Eastern and Central Europe, namely from Austria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia. They travel a lot, they have personal, living and great relationship with all of their producers.

Borderless, multilingual, versatile and delicious

And how do they argue to prove their point about the potential of Furmint to become a widely known variety? “For one, there’s only around 5000 hectares under vine worldwide. Roughly 4000 are in Tokaj alone. And if you happen to find it among the remaining 1000 hectares, it will most likely fall under a completely different name. Zapfner/Mosler in Austria/Germany, Pušipel/Moslavac in Croatia, and Šipon in Slovenia. Only South Africa uses Furmint other than Hungary and a handful of growers here in CA. There are roughly 340,000 hectares of Cabernet and we basically all call it Cabernet or Cab. And this is exactly why we love Furmint. Borderless, multilingual, versatile and delicious. It’s anything but a consistent brand, it’s a wonderful hot mess.”
Well, thank you, it is like an ode to Furmint!
