VinAgora results released
The OIV / Vinofed member VinAgora international wine contest results have just been announced. We are soon going to publish some statistics and interesting facts, meanwhile you can browse the medal winners on the official website of the contest. Tűzkő Estate is owned by two Tuscan noble families, Marchese Piero Antinori and the Mazzei family. With so much SuperTuscan “in their blood”, no wonder that a Merlot wine has won gold medal this year.
Silky Merlot from Mórágy vineyard
The fruit for gold winner Tűzkő Merlot 2019 came from Mórágy vineyard. After careful bunch selection and destemming, the fermentation takes place at low temperature in stainless steel tanks. The wine aged in 300 L second and third use Hungarian oak – the estate has a cooperage sister company called European Wine Cooperage. As Giulia Bernini of Tűzkő Estate said in a recent interview, the “homemade” barrels are key to their success. Vintage 2019 Merlot aged for 14 months.
“Intense ruby red in colour. The nose is defined by notes of mixed berries, blueberries, blackberries, and floral hints of violet. A wine with good structure and a soft finish.”
Food recommendation: Pairs perfectly with chicken, charcuterie, roast beef, roasted vegetable, grilled mushrooms and butternut squash.
Tolna – a wine region to discover
Szekszárd is a significant wine region in the Transdanubia, and though Tolna is less known, it has a strong potential as well regarding winemaking. The carefully cultivated vineyards and rows of cellars act as attractions for wine tourists. Wine travellers may enjoy warm welcome in the cellars of Paks, Mőcsény, Simontornya, Felsőnyék, Hőgyész and other villages of Völgység (’Valley Land’). The tiny village of Bátaapáti, hidden in the neighbourhood of lakes of Zsibrik and Szálka belong to this lovely and fabulous region. Tolna wine region gives good quality white wines in the first place made of varieties like Chardonnay, Tramini, Zöldveltelini, Olaszrizling and Sauvignon Blanc.
A historic estate first owned by Counts of Apponyi family
Tűzkő Estate is located near the village of Bátaapáti, among the hills of Tolna, near the river Danube. The winery is only 150 kilometres from Budapest southbound. The hills and the small valleys, along with the lakes of Szálka and Zsibrik create an ideal microclimate for grape growing.
The wine estate can boast a long history of viticulture: first it was a small settlement of German habitants, then it became the granary of the larger estate. The former underground cellars of this granary are used nowadays for the ageing of the wines.
The history of Tűzkő Estate is closely related to that of the Counts of Apponyi family of French origin. The roots of the family date back to the beginning of the 18th century, but their most active period took place in the 19th century. Among the territories belonging to the family, the estate of Bátaapáti had the most potential regarding both quantity and quality. Utilizing the opportunities given by nature, the Apponyis launched innovative techniques both in viticulture and winemaking.
