Hungary leading CEE countries with Decanter Platinum medals
Sauska Medve Furmint 2021 – huge success with a dry white
More than 18.000 wines were evaluated by Decanter jury members, and only 117 wines received 97 or more points. France is leading the chart followed by Italy, Spain and Portugal. From the Central Eastern Europe region Hungary is the most successful with 4 Platinum medals followed by Austria (3), Slovenia (1) and Georgia (1). Plus, Hungary has won a Best in Show, which is the highest accolade of Decanter World Wine Awards – Gizella Tokaji Aszú 2019 is among the top 50 wines of the 21st DWWA.
As for the Platinum medals, 3 of the Hungarian Platinum winners are sweet Tokaj wines, which are not considered to be surprising, however, this year there is a dry white Platinum winner as well: Sauska Medve Furmint 2021 from Tokaj.

Decanter jury about Sauska Medve Furmint 2021
“Cuts an alluring dash with stylish grapefruit, peach and apricot characters laced with delicious coconut oak. Steely, vivid and fresh with a linear structure, a spine-tingling citrus acidity and vibrant saline finish. Long and precise.”

Tokaj once again proved its invincibility
As Sebastian Giraldo sommelier, Sauska Brand Ambassador commented: “We are immensely proud that Sauska Medve Furmint 2021 became the only Hungarian dry wine that won Platinum at DECANTER WORLD WINE AWARDS 2024! It means that a dry Tokaj can indeed achieve as the same prestigious international ranking at the competitive field as our classic sweet wines from our region. This vineyard (its name means “bear”) occupies a special place in our hearts, since this is where we started the ecological transition back in 2019, and where 20 of our colleagues, 19 baby doll sheep and a miniature pig live. There is no question that they helped us along the way, this wine was embraced by nature, as you can feel it in every sip.
No question that Tokaj once again proved its invincibility: the four Hungarian Platinum medals plus the Best in Show are all Tokaj wines, huge congratulations to Laci Szilágyi for the latter! This wine region is certainly capable of everything, from sweet to dry wines to sparkling, as our winemaker Gábor Rakaczki’s decades of great work proves.”
Hungarian Gettogether will take place at Sauska Tokaj on 15th August! If you are a wine professional and interested, write to us.
