Besides the walk around tasting of volcanic wines international and Hungarian top experts – for example Elizabeth Gabay MW, John Szabo MS, Roland Velich – will conduct several masterclasses, plus geologists will explain science simply, so that we could understand the concept of volcanic terroir. The summit will also feature an exhibition of rocks, minerals, volcanic soils and visual presentations curated by leading geoscientists in Hungary and Europe. GoVolcanic will also have a special focus for kids, so children can also enjoy the learning experience. They can explore science first-hand, thanks to a team of trained teachers, specializing in on-site creative activities for kids.

Hungarian volcanic maniacs

GoVolcanic Summit will showcase 90 wines made of grapes grown on volcanic soils. Let us intruduce three of the wineries, who will each present a special wine at the event. The idea of this series of photos came from photographer Gábor Nagy, and since then the pictures have become symbol of a kind of „volcanic movement” thanks to Eva Catwright, organizer of GoVolcanic.

Zsirai Winery, Tokaj

The Zsirai sisters, Kata and Petra have vineyards in Villány and Volcanic Somló as well, but their headquarter is where their most precious vineyards are situated: in the village of Mád, Tokaj wine region. They will present a wine made of Furmint from 2015. „On the nose peach andstony tones. Fresh, crispy acidity,  fruity aromas. In the finish it brilliantly reflects the mireality typical of Mád vineyards.”

Kovács Nimród Winery, Eger

The perfectionist Nimród Kovács creates his wines in the „Burgundy of Hungary”. Eger is similar to the iconic French wine region in many aspects, thus for KNW Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are equally important besides indigenous Hungarian varieties. At GoVolcanic Nimród and his team will present Battonage Chardonnay 2015 (battonage with double ’t’ is not mispelled, the name of the wine has a special spelling). „Made in a classical Burgundian style, our 2015 Chardonnay Battonage expresses the unique terroir of our Nyilasmár and Nagyfai Estates (Monopole) with distinct minerality, fresh fruit flavours of pears and apples with light buttery and toasty oak notes. Aged on its lees in small French and Hungarian oak barrels, our Chardonnay has elegant freshness, vivid acids and long harmonious finish.”

Csetvei Cellar, Mór

Krisztina Csetvei started her career as a marketing expert, but soon she fell in love with the world of wine and left everything to start a new life in the second smallest wine region of Hungary. Since then she has got married, has had a daughter and several vintages. She loves experimenting, for example she ages indigenous Ezerjó in wood, in stainless steel and in amphora. Another playful wine is the Kő-Papír-Olló wine family (’Rock-Paper-Scirrors’) – three wines made of Olaszrizling grape but with a little difference. At GoVolcanic event Kő (’Rock’) 2017 will be presented, an Olaszrizling from the smallest wine region, Somló (Csetvei has some vineyards there as well) aged in wooden barrel.
