The „liquid” diplomats

Did you get an invitation to the Embassy of Hungary? Accept it! Whatever the topic is, the wines are guaranteed to be of outstanding quality. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary started to organize a wine selection in 2001, and since 2014 the ministry has shipped the selected wines to all the embassies, 140 countries – thus the ministry happens to be the most significant exporter of Hungarian wines. So, whatever your opinion is about the foreign politics of Hungary, please, clear your mind and turn to the innocent bottles and dedicate full attention to them!

Wines at two price segments

Helga Gál, the wine and gastronomy consultant of the ministry is the „engine” behind the wine selection, she puts every effort in it so that the outcome could be a wine selection of wines made of Hungarian varieties, representing our terroirs with extraordinary quality. The selected wines are divided into two categories: Grand Superior wines for important guests and special events and the so called „Party wines” ,which are aimed to be served at larger events. Within the categories all the basic styles can be found: sparkling, light white, aged white, light red, aged red, late harvest dessert wine, tokaji aszú. Therefore, if you are interested in importing Hungarian wines, the easiest step might be to contact the nearest Embassy of Hungary.

3 wines to taste

The bottle fermented sparkling wine is made of Tokaj varieties and an international one: Furmint (66%), Chardonnay (25%) and Hárslevelű (9%). „Pale yellow. Pineapple, mint, and quince lead the nose. Honey and elderflower dominate the palate along with pure minerality. The refined finish echoes a flowery note.”

Olaszrizling (also knows as Welschriesling) is the most widely planted white grape of Hungary. The fruit for this Dúzsi wine comes fromTolna wine region, from a sandy vineyard. The fermentation took place in stainless steeltank. „Medium body, balanced acidity to make the wine crispy and refreshing, juicy palate with bitter almond aftertaste typical of the variety.”

János Eszterbauer, owner of the winery is a master of Kadarka variety. „Nagyapám” (literally ’My grandfather’). „The result of our clonal selection and the fruits of our old vineyards give the elegant and complex flavour. Intense kadarka!”
