Making wine, building a winery and bringing it to success is not simply a business – it is a passion, an integral part of your life. We have been producing grapes and making wine on Somló since 1946. The Tornai Winery started with the momentum of the post-war rebuilding effort, and decades of continuous construction have made it one of the most significant family estates of Somló wine region.
In the best vineyards of the Somló hill, we mainly grow the indigenous grape varieties. Wine made from these can best showcase the volcanic taste of Somló, which is one of a kind in the world. Our main variety is clearly the Juhfark, but other traditional grape varieties are also important to us: Furmint, Olaszrizling, Hárslevelű, Tramini, and we are happy to take care of the other indigenous variety of Somló, the Csomorika. In response to the changes of the market, we introduced the highly successful Hungarian varieties, Pinot Gris, Zeusz, Zenit and Irsai Olivér to Somló.
We strive to make the most perfect wines, as shown by a number of major international accolades as well. We are most proud of our 5 Trophy Awards at the International Wine Challange in London. But we don’t just offer wines, we also offer events. Experiences that Somló, this unique hill, will make forever memorable.
Somló wines
You cannot find wines similar to those of Somló made anywhere else in the world. And we say this not out of bias. They are easy to recognize out of a thousand: wines with characteristic minerality and especially rich content, which are the result of the interplay of several important factors. First, the soil of the hill is not simply volcanic, but quite specific in its rock composition. One that grapes really like.
Secondly, indigenous grape varieties are able to display the characteristics of the soil in the wine with special minerality.
And thirdly, the weather conditions of the hill protruding from the plain, are particularly favorable for the grape: it remains healthy and ripens perfectly. In the cellar, all we have to do is combine centuries of experience and state-of-the-art procedures to make the wine from the exceptional raw material in such a way as to showcase the speciality of the hill as beautifully as possible.
Somló and Juhfark
Wine that is considered the most representative of the Somló region, and is highly valued by consumers with a refined palate, is produced from the native white Juhfark whose name literally means “sheep’s tail”, because in its form it looks like this.
Somló Juhfark is a perfect match between variety and terroir. The specialty of the hill is best expressed by Juhfark, and vice versa: the varietal characteristics of Juhfark are best shown on Somló. The result is a complex, mineral, inimitable wine. Juhfark gets close to the top at the age of 2-3 and stays on top for several years. This is due to its acids, rich content and relatively high alcohol.

Wines
PREMIUM JUHFARK 2022
Intense nose, citrus, asparagus and tropical fruits appear. In its flavor, the fruitiness dominates, behind the green apple and the citrus character, with good acidity and long aftertaste.
GRÓFI HÁRSLEVELŰ 2019
One of our most exciting varieties, which gives a very special, yet easy-to-love wine. We harvested the golden-yellow bunches with a low yield, which provide a special sight towards the end of ripening.
ARANYHEGY JUHFARK 2022
This wine was born from the vines of the Aranyhegy vineyard, made with carefully selected ripe grapes and gentle processing. Barrel maturation further enriched the flavors, creating this special wine, available in a limited number of bottles.
PREMIUM OLASZRIZLING
Olaszrizling in a sophisticated version. This Olaszrizling was made from perfectly ripe grapes, by gentle processing and fermentation in steel tanks.
APÁTSÁGI FURMINT 2021
A wine with great ageing potential, which is a great example of the good Furmint wines. Its main virtue is that it can be a rich wine so that harmony and elegancy already shaped in. It is worth keeping for years, it has a long ageing period.
ICE WINE 2022
Special wine from a special vintage, made from Zeusz grape variety. Pale yellow color with greenish reflexes. The expressive nose is based on flowers honey and ripen grapefruit and lemon grass. On the palate the clean sweet sip is completed with caramelized lemon and orange peel. The high level of acidity and light bodied style is nice balance with the sugar content.
