Every single berry counts
Tokaji Aszú is one of the most prestigious sweet wines of the world. Sauternes is amazing, no doubt, but when it comes to comparing, many wine experts admit that the vibrant acidity of Tokaji Aszú can beat the famous French rival. What is more, the volcanic soil adds some extra complexity, some unique minerality to the wines. And at last, but not least, the complicated traditional procedure of making Aszú wines involving picking every botrytised berry by hand, makes it even more prestigious. This is how the winner Barta Tokaji Aszú was made from the breath-taking Öreg Király vineyard (meaning ‘Old King’):
“2019 is one of the outstanding Aszú vintages of the past decade. For this wine, botrytised, shrivelled Furmint berries were individually hand-picked and then macerated in fermenting Furmint base must for 18 hours before gentle pressing and fermentation in oak barrels. The fully fermented wine was cooled, racked, and then aged in small Hungarian and French oak barrels for 24 months. Already rich and complex, while developing towards a perfect balance…”
Barta wines are available in several countries, for example in the United Kingdom, imported by Corney & Barrow.
