Babarczi Pannonhalmi Merlot, 2018
The family winery of Pannonhalma wine region was famous for the crispy, juicy, elegant white wines. Why was? Because recently they have started making red wines, and they are doing very well! “Dark ruby red colour. Spicy nose with smoked pepper, dried herbs, sweet plum and red berries. Medium weight with a youthful texture, grippy tannin, a hint of oak, sweet red berry flavours and a quite long finish. Still a bit youthful and restrained.” 88 scores
Csányi Teleki Tradício Villány Franc, 2015
With the arrival of László Romsics as CEO a few years ago, the largest winery of Villány began an overall development. Teleki Tradíció is a new prestige brand within the estate.
“Intense dark purple core with a slightly lighter ruby rim. Fragrant and layered nose displaying ripe cassis, plum, red berries with sage, mint and tobacco underlined by fine oak. The palate is broad and structured with ripe dark fruit flavours, yet underlined by a vibrant acidity, youthful but ripe tannin, a nice herbal spiciness and a long grippy finish. Still needing some time in the cellar but fine potential.” 91 scores
Barta Öreg Király Dűlő Furmint, 2018
Barta Cellar is a success story, their wines are always described with superlatives. The reason? An amazing terroir of Mád (Tokaj) called Öreg Király (‘Old King’), grape varieties with great potential, conscious winemaking philosophy and a very talented winemaker. “Light straw colour with a green hue. Nuanced nose displaying discreet wood and light toast with fresh pear, quince, citrus and saffron. The palate has nice volume and fluidity with a nice bite and extract, sweet fruit flavours yet remaining dry with a crisp acidity and a long pure finish.” 92 scores
Heumann Winery Terra Tartaro 2015
Heumann is a Villány winery run by a Swiss–German couple, their devotion to the wine region is admirable. Terra Tartaro is a Bordeaux blend with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot. “Medium deep ruby red colour. Pure and fragrant nose blending cassis, plum, leather, tobacco with a hint of oak. Nice density on the palate with ripe fruit a good dose of freshness, ripe and grainy tannin, fine oak integration and a long savoury finish. Still a slight tannic bite to it but really starting to open and should drink nicely in the coming 5-6 years.” 92 scores
Heumann Winery – Trinitás 2016
Another wine of the Heumanns made of the most important Villány grape variety: Cabernet Franc. As we reported earlier, with this 93 score result Trinitás is the Hungarian red with the highest scores on Tasted.com along with NJK from Kovács Nimród Winery. “Intense dark purple colour. The nose starts with some new oak and toast paired with ripe black fruit, cassis, plum, tobacco and fine spices. Very good grip on the palate, dense but fresh dark fruit with pepper, clove, fine wood and tobacco notes, young but ripe tannin with a long and layered finish. Nicely done.” 93 scores
