7 reasons to visit 75 year old Tornai Winery
Somló is the smallest wine region in Hungary, and this tiny volcanic mountain is the home of great wines. Tornai Winery, one of the most important estates of the region celebrates the 75th anniversary of its foundation. “The first steps of the many decades-long adventure were taken in 1946 by Endre Tornai. We are proud of the long journey, the extraordinary results and grateful to our helpers, especially our most faithful partner, Somló.“ The estate is planning several events and extra features to commemorate the anniversary, these are not revealed yet, but Tornai is worth a visit anytime.
4 trophies – unprecedented in Hungary
Every gold and silver medal counts, but some wine contests stand out, and the UK based International Wine Challenge is definitely one of the most rigorous and influential wine competitions. Tornai Winery can boast an unprecedented success among Hungarian wineries: they won 4 trophies, the last one for Top Selection Grófi Hárslevelű. „This is rich and honeyed, yet has precision. With a saline edge to the vital pear and peach fruit and a hint of sweetness. Big and balanced. Lovely stuff!” – commented IWC judges about the wine. Certainly Juhfark wines are mandatory to taste, since Juhfark is the iconic grape variety of Somló, and Tornai Top Selection Aranyhegy Juhfark 2019 received silver medal at Mundus Vini.
3 in one – ideal for sporties, foodies and winelovers
- Tornai estate has an in house restaurant with a large terrace offering seasonal meals made of local ingredients. The winery offers wine dinners as well – a 5 course wine dinner costs only 15.800 HUF / person (44 euros) and includes dishes like salmon tartare with home made sweet bread and tangerine paired with Tornai Zenit 2018. The restaurant is not open at the moment, but we hope that the opening is coming closer and closer.
- Bike rental is a popular service of the estate: visitors can rent bikes every day and they get a free bike map as well. If they need refreshment for the tour, they can fill in their bottles. There are many steep slopes, so it is wise to take plenty of ‘fröccs’ (light wine with soda water).
- Cellar tours are organized like in every winery, but Tornai Winery has a wine museum as well with wine related objects collected for decades. And for those, who prefer not to rush but to stay overnight or longer, Séd Cellar and Guest House is the place to stay in undisturbed tranquility.
