With a population of 200.000 people Debrecen is the 2nd largest city of Hungary. Its wine selection is a tradition now, and the winners of the wine contest will be featured at local restaurants and festivals during the upcoming year. This year 235 wines entered from 14 wine regions.

The winners are:

– Sparkling: Furmint Extra Brut 2017, Gróf Degenfeld (Tokaj)
– White / classic: Nivegy-völgy Bio Olaszrizling 2019, Dobosi (Balaton)
– White / premium: Meditation Dry Furmint 2018, Holdvölgy (Tokaj)
– Rosé: Syrah 2020, Mészáros Pál (Szekszárd)
– Red / classic: Bikavér Classicus 2016, Thummerer (Eger)
– Red / premium: Vintage 2017, Vesztergombi (Szekszárd)

Vesztergombi Vintage 2017 – a success story

As for our cover photo, it features Vesztergombi Vintage 2017 from Szekszárd. The family winery has a classic and a premium line, Vintage is from the premium line. It is a blend of four international varieties – Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz –, plus a local grape: Kékfrankos. As a result, it can also be interpreted as the estate wine of the family. The wine was born to fully exploit the greatness of vintage 2017 and at the same time to express the stunning Szekszárd terroir. The wine aged in 300 L and 500 L barrels for 24 months.

It was also selected to be one of the Top 100 Wines of Hungary (No 22) and received 90 points from Pécsi Borozó wine magazine. And another fresh acknowledgement: Vesztergombi Vintage 2017 received bronze medal at IWSC, one of the most prestigious European wine competitions – with this result it is the best Hungarian red wine of the British contest. And what did the judges – Sarah Abbott MW, David Round MW, Matteo Montone and Terry Kandylis say? “Deep dark black fruits with sweet spice and violets offering excellent structure and big tannins.”
