More about the wine course

The spice of a proud nation

Hungary has a wine tradition stretching back to Roman times. Yet despite surviving centuries of political, religious and economic challenges the independent wine industry was all but suffocated under the Soviet System. Thankfully the end of the 20th century saw a reawakening of Hungary as a great wine producer. Today this proud nation at the crossroads of Central Europe is a wine-producing country of considerable diversity; a rich selection of indigenous grape varieties and twenty two official wine regions, each of which have their own particular blend of culture, history, terroir and wine style. – comments David Harker, the owner of Newcastle Wine School (who is, by chance, a finalist of Hungarian WebWineWriting competition).
Sauska Kadarka is one of the wines of the wine course – a great example of this exciting, fruity, spicy, light bodied – and light hearted – indigenous variety. The crop comes from Ördögárok vineyard, one of the best “crus” of Villány wine region. Manual selection of the berries, gentle crushing, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel and small French oak. Ageing is also partially in steel and oak.
Light, translucent ruby red. The nose surprisingly intense with an outburst of ripe plum, tart cherry, and homemade cherry compote juice aromas along with a touch of thyme. Medium-bodied and well-balanced, with silky tannins. A very cool, food-friendly indigenous red.
