 Fresh, fruity, spicy, exciting and invigorating – this is RedY, the community red wine of Villány. Youngsters of the Y generation love the experience of discovering new varieties, therefore RedY was created to attract young wine lovers to the exciting world of wine. Obviously Villány winemakers invite everyone, not only the millennials to enjoy this affordable (around 5–8 euros in retail) and lovely wine.

Portugieser, this local grape is the base of the blend, it has to contain 51–66%, while other local grapes (Blauburger, Kadarka, Kékfrankos and Zweigelt) can contribute with 20–49% and international varietals cannot exceed 14%. A local board evaluates all the submitted samples, and only those that are approved can use the official name and label.

One of the RedY producers is Zsolt Gere, the son of Tamás Gere. Their RedY reflects Zsolt’s experience and knowledge – Gere Zsolt RedY is always fruit driven, cheerful, spicy and refreshing. The 2021 blend contains Portugieser 60%, Kékfrankos 30% and Kadarka 10%..

On 22 April 2022 Villány wine region will host the 8th edition of Portugieser du Monde international wine contest. The list of the members of the jury is almost complete with renowned experts of the variety, but the organizers would like to introduce Portugieser grape to a wider range of wine professionals, therefore a limited number of experts can still apply for participation.

The host Villány wine region provides meals and accommodation plus travel cost from Budapest to Villány (flight tickets are not paid). The contest is followed by a tasting event on 23 April.

More about Portugieser grape variety

In Hungary this grape variety is restricted to Villány wine region, rarely made elsewhere, if it is, in Eger and Kunság. Portugieser is grown in other countries in Central Europe: in Germany (more than 4000 hectares), in Austria (more than 2000 hectares), in Hungary (more than 1000 hectares), Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Portugal, France.

This productive grape ripens early and gives ruby red, fruity, velvety, easy to drink wines with sufficient acidity. Portugieser is to be consumed when fresh and young, but we can see beautiful examples of aged ones as well.

The grape variety is likely to be of Austrian origin, and despite the name it is not likely to derive from Portugal. In Hungary Kékoportó was the common name, but due to European Union regulations this name cannot be used any more, because it would refer to (mistakenly) the city and wine region of Port (Oporto) in Portugal.
