Bordeaux blends by Hungarian wineries

The annual Bordó November features Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Merlot blends from all over Hungary. Taste Lajver from Szekszárd, Tűzkő from Tolna, Taschner from Sopron – and you will quickly get a picture of Bordeaux blends made in different wine regions of Hungary. Then go on tasting, because more than 150 wines will be featured at the “reddest tasting of the autumn”.

Taschner Soproni Cabernet Cuvée 2019

Kurt István Taschner has an experimental spirit, ha makes white, rose and red wines and also sparkling and dessert wines, he uses some rare grape varieties, like ‘Korai Piros Veltelini’. His aromatic Irsai Olivér was the first new vintage wine on the market in 2021 and also won the contest of new vintage wines. Apart from using local grapes with great passion (Kékfrankos, Irsai, Zenit, etc), he admits the merits of the wellknown international grapes. His Cabernet Cuvée (made of Cabernet Franc and Merlot) boasts exciting spices, fruits and notes from ageing, while on the palate the sweetish fruity flavours are perfectly balanced with the crispy acidity. Long lasting taste with coffee and toasty notes. Retail price: 6 euro.

Tűzkő Domb 2019

Tűzkő Estate (owned by Marchese Piero Antinori from Tuscany) is situated among the picturesque hills of Tolna and makes wines of local grapes like Kékfrankos, and they also achieve success with their wines of international grapes. Tűzkő Chardonnay was awarded The Best Chardonnay of Winelovers Wine Awards. The iconic blend of the estate, Tűzkő Domb is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, the grapes are hand harvested from 16 year old vines in the low yield vineyard called Tűzkő Domb (Tűzkő Hill) in Mórágy village. Moderate barrique maturation and long bottle ageing make this wine elegant, subtle and long lasting, made only in exceptional vintages. “Deep colour, full bodied, matured wine rich in refined tannins. Thanks to the two varieties fruity and spicy notes meet, and the blend is made complex with some discrete barrel ageing and 10 months of bottle ageing. Refined, integrated tannins with the deep, warm character of Cabernet Franc and the velvety and chocolate character of Merlot.” Retail price: 15 euro.

Lajver Infinity Cuvée Selection 2017

The state-of-the-art Szekszárd winery is located in a breathtaking valley surrounded by the terraces of vineyard. The estate cares for indigenous varieties and they also like adding a little extra – just think of Incogn’to, a white wine made of the black Kékfrankos grape. Infinity is one of their top wines made of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each batch is matured separately, the best ones are selected and matched. In general, ageing in oak barrels lasts for 12 months, but in the case of Cabernet Franc it could take for up to 14 months. “A definite Szekszárd Cuvée Cabernet with French dominance is the first to show in its fragrance. Berries and ripe raspberries are present in a sip; elegant barrel notes, sweet spices, roasted notes, a pleasant tannin feel make it meaningful. It has strength, firmness, fruit and spice, and long-lasting flavours. Hardcover, the potential is very much in it. It will be a lasting experience for years, served in glasses to food and kept in a cellar.” Retail price: 10 euro.
