Hungarian wine tasting in Warsaw, Poland
8 brilliant wines on 18 April
There is an old saying: “Hungarian and Polish – two great friends”. And indeed, a latest example is this tasting of next week. Łukasz Ostrowski wine expert spent his honeymoon in Hungary, and though it was 12 years ago, he still cherishes goof memories of not only the trip itself, but Tokaj landscape and wines as well. He used to work with renowned wine writer Tomasz Prange Barczyński at Magazyn Wino, and Łukasz is a frequent reader of Tomasz’s articles on Hungarian wines. “I decided to have a tasting of Hungarian wines because I like “our” (Central and Eastern) part of Europe and I thing, the wines from this region are underestimated” – says Łukasz on why he organises this event.
A truly outstanding Bikavér
Bikavér is the flagship blend of two wine regions, Eger and Szekszárd. Vilmos Thummerer, who was awarded the prestigious award Winemaker of the Year, is an acknowledged master of Bikavér wines. His Egri Bikavér Grand Superior, 2012 was chosen the best red wine according to the Hungarian Circle of Winewriters (2016). His Classicus Bikavér (blend of six varieties: Kékfrankos, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon,Cabernet Franc, into Noir and Kadarka) is also a lovely wine: “Bright, ruby colour. Nose reminiscent of red currant with notes from barrel ageing. Rich flavour full of spices and rounded, soft tannins.”
