Jardinette – sunny wine garden even in winter!

Budapest is divided into Buda and Pest, Buda is the older and more romantic. Jardinette restaurant absolutely suits this romanting image of Buda, what is more the place offers a winter garden (made of glass) to enjoy sunshine in the colder season. The restaurant is highly active, they organize events frequently, many of them are wine related events.

The spy who saved a group of kids from Nazis

The next special dinner is a „food and music” pairing recalling one of the most famous singers of Hungary, Katalin Karády. The beautiful woman had a unique voice and an adventurous life. During the II World War Gestapo accused her of being the spy of the allies, she was imprisoned and tortured. When she was released, her house was robbed, she was devastated, but she was still active to help those who needed – she could save a group of children by selling her jewels and gave them shelter in her own flat till the end of the war. After the war, during the communist era her career turned to worse, thus she left the country with the help of a human smuggler and finally she settled in New York, she died there. The dinner to recall her extraordinary talent and voice will take place on 28 February, the songs will be performed by Kamilka & Pesti Sikk Akusztik, and some of the dinner courses are the dishes which were Karádi’s favourite ones (like the honeyed chicken breast with Calvados-ragout and carrot). Another event – more important for wine lovers – is a father–son wine dinner to present wines of Hernyák Estate from Etyek wine region. László and Tamás Hernyák will tell their story, how they converted their estate into an organic one and many other things – on 7 March.

The menu of the special dinners are not translated into English, but if you contact the restaurant, they will send more information.

Listen to Katalin Karádi singing in 1939:

French and Hungarian cuisine

Jardinette restaurant is a place where the gastronomy of two nations meet and create an ideal selection, thus every guest will find his choice for sure. Classic French dishes like boeuf bourguignon or the above mentioned Calvados ragout, but traditional Hungarian dishes can also be tasted like catfish stew with pasta with cottage cheese or vealstew with paprika with egg noodles. As for the wine list, Jardinette offers only Hungarian wines, but the selection was made with great care and knowledge. You can find well known names but also small artisan wineries (like Sándor Zsolt winery from the lesser known Bükk wine region or Váli from Badacsony). All the wines are available by the glass and they can also be purchased as from a wine shop, with 25% discount.

Joker choice: Haraszthy Sir Irsai

A ’joker’ wine choice is Haraszthy Sir Irsai from Etyek wine region. „A blend based on authentic varieties. A nicely balanced wine manufactured for slow drinking. On the nose, the Irsai Oliver’s muscat and litchi aromas are accumulating with the elderflower characteristic. On the palate, the Királyleányka’s floral and fruity tastes are dominating.”The wine is superb with soups, for example with the daily offer corn cream soup with bacon chips.

The sweet side of life: Béres Magita Cuvée

Béres Magita Cuvée is a superb late harvest wine made in Tokaj wine region. The blend of 67% Hárslevelű, 30% Furmint and 3% Muscat Lunel with 104 g/l residual sugar is an ideal match for desserts. „Full of flowers and fruits both on the nose and palate. The vivid acidity and the barrel aging makes this wine balanced, harmonious.” Jardinette’s chef, István Csánky created an unforgettable dessert: almond tart with pear– highly advised to taste with a glass of Magita!
