Another wine contest of Villány wine region

Villány is one of the most important wine regions regarding Hungarian red wines, its speciality is the single varietal Cabernet Franc, it has been registered as Villányi Franc.

The wine region of Villány consists of several subregions, one of them is around the town of Siklós. The little town is a good alternative of Villány if you are seeking accommodation, it has some nice guest houses, bed and breakfast facitilies and hotels, and there is a medieval castle worth visiting, and a thermal spa to relax as well. Villány is within easy reach of Siklós even by bicycle which can be rented from most of the accommodating places.

Saint George day wine contest

Siklós-Tenkes wine council holds its annual wine contest in April on Saint George day. The results have just been released. The absolute winner is Heumann Winery, a winery owned by an ambitious Swiss couple, and their champion wine is made of Kékfrankos, the most widely planted indigenous black grape variety of Hungary.
Among the gold medal winning wines again Kékfrankos is the most frequent, there are some white and rosé wines, some blends, and of course Villány wine region’s typical Cabernet Franc is represented. Csányi Winery’s top brand, Kővilla Cabernet Franc 2012 is the gold medal winning Cabernet Franc with the highest scores.

Kővilla – elegant wine at moderate price

Kővilla literally means ’Stone Villa’, an old stone house in the vineyard from where the grape for this magnificent wine comes from. 2/3 of the wine was matured in new 225 L barrique, while 1/3 was aged in 500 L oak barrel for more than 2 years. It has a significant structure, complexity and long finish full of the flavours of ripened red fruits. The wine won a gold medal at Berliner Wine Trophy as well, and it has a retail price of only around 9 euros.
