The Chinese international wine contest focuses on great value wines, thus the list of gold winners is a valuable resource for buyers of supermarkets. Hungary won 6 gold medals, 3 medals went to Tokaj (Tokajicum), 2 gold to Szekszárd(Szent Gaál) and 1 medal to Villány – represented by Csányi Winery with Chateau Teleki Merlot 2019.

380 hectares in top vineyards

Csányi Winery is located on the outskirts of the town of Villány, the predecessor of which, Chateau Teleki Winery was established by Zsigmond Teleki, the world famous viticulturist in 1881. The owners considered the traditions important, therefore they left the old system of cellars – now a rarity – almost intact, and built a modern winery above it that meets today’s demands. Plantations are stretching over 380 hectares in the best vineyards of Villány wine region; the most significant vineyards are Kopár, Csillagvölgy, Jammertal, Agancsos, Ördögárok and Hársos.

Chateau Teleki Villányi merlot Hungary red wine

Spicy, juicy, velvety

The fruit from Chateau Teleki Merlot 2019 came from Hársos vineyard in the village of Kisharsány. 63% of the wine matured in large Hungarian wooden barrels while 37% aged in second and third use Hungarian barrique. Dark ruby colour with pomegranate shade. Intense nose reminiscent of sour cherry jam and red berry fruits. Distinct spicy character on the palate with subtle acidity again recalling ripened, still fresh red fruits. Velvety tannins finely tuned to the structure of the wine.” And a bottle costs less than 6,5 euros!
