The cover girl, the polyglot and the serious player – Lajver News
Lajver Wine Estate is the place for party goer winelovers, but the state of art winery is much more than the producer of easy going summer wines. It is the home of great wines expressing Szekszárd terroir as well.
The cover girl
If you want to buy Lajver rosé in a supermarket, you might end up with “sold out” signs. Their Lajver Szekszárdi Rose 2020 got on the cover of market leading VinCE Magazine, June issue, since it is one of the best rosés of the panel tasting, and as for price-value, it is a real champion. This rosé is a blend of 4 varieties: Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch) 48%, Zweigelt 21%, Syrah 16.5% and Merlot 14.5%, After the quick harvest manual cluster selection took place. Alcoholic fermentation carried on in a stainless steel tank in a reductive space by variety. After separate maturation, they blended the wines to achieve the best taste and aroma harmony.
“Like a loose, summer raspberry syrup, it starts with a colour and then you’re not disappointed in its scent either. Ripe raspberries as we pick them from the prickly bushes as its juice drips out. There is a little roasted sugar scent behind the fruitiness, which makes it just more flattering, kinder. It also comes back from a sip of it, where the dynamic acid character and the creamy sense of alcohol, the fresh fruitiness and the flattering, sweet juiciness playfully intertwine. The second sip is still fresh, the fruitiness is crunchy and it’s nice to raise a toast on it and then take a sip of it again.”
The polyglot
Lajver Wine Estate looks amazing, a modern building smoothly fitting in its environment, surrounded by 12 terraces of vineyards. However, for some years the website did not have an English version, and as a consequence this breathtaking place was hidden from foreign wine tourists. Finally this gap was filled as Lajver has recently launched its multilingual website, not only in English, but in French, German, Russian and Serbian language as well!
The serious player
Though Lajver makes amazing, thirst quenching summer wines – Lajver Cuvée Blanc is always the ideal choice for a summer lunch –, the winery makes great wines with ageing potential as well. Lajver Rhine Riesling is a complex white wine with all the merits of the variety, Incognito is an exciting white Kékfrankos and Signum is the new red label of the estate, the “signature of the estate”.
Szekszárd is famous for its Szekszárdi Bikavér blend, a red blend with Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch) base. Lajver aimed to express Szekszárd terroir with Signum, but in their own, innovative and experimenting way, with Bordeaux varieties besides the minimum 50% Kékfrankos. The wine was made first in 2012 and became a huge success, the favourite of many collectors, the wine of festivities. Meanwhile the rules of Szekszárdi Bikavér grew stricter – thus closer to Signum.
Finally Lajver team realized that Signum is actually a Premium Szekszárdi Bikavér – without Kadarka. The solution came quickly: Lajver Wine Estate has a high quality Kadarka vineyard, which does not decrease the value of Signum, on the contrary: it adds some extra spiciness to the blend! Attila Nagy vineyard and winemaker consultant recalls the day of the blending as follows: “We were doing the blending. 3 samples with nuance differences, 4 people around the table, sniffing, tasting silently. One of us was smiling, then the other. We were so excited! Then, without a word, we voted – all 4 of us for the same sample! It was an Eureka-moment indeed!” The final blend of Signum Premium Szekszárdi Bikavér 2019 is: 55% Kékfrankos, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Kadarka, 1% Cabernet Franc.
