Two great wines to celebrate International Pinot Noir Day

These two wines have several things in common, the grape obviously, the outstanding quality, the cooler climate, but most of all, a person, who has to be mentioned in connection with Pinot Noir in Hungary. He is the late Tibor Gál, who was a pioneer in planting Pinot Noir in our country. The first wine below is made by his son, Tibor Gál, while the second is made by Zsolt Liptai, the chief winemaker of Pannonhalma Archabbey Winery, since the recent cellar was built according to Tibor Gál’s plans, and he had a huge influence on the styles of the wines.

Gál Tibor Pinot Noir 2022, Eger

The grapes of Síkhegy vineyard were harvested in small casks. Spontaneous fermentation, 20 days on the skin. Ageing in Hungarian 500 L used oak barrels for 12 months. Without fining and filtering. A serious, mature Pinot Noir. Ruby colour with dark hues. The nose reveals red sour cherries and a peculiar thyme note. Refreshing, crispy and fruity on the palate. Full and rich with balanced acidity and long finish.

Pannonhalmi Pinot Noir 2021, Pannonhalma

Matching the styles of the old and the new worlds. The manifold soil and microclimatic facilities of the Pannonhalma wine region offer a unique potential to apply traditional technology combined with modern, new world approach.

The wine is characterized by typical aromas of the variety on the nose. It reveals the full scale of red berries of the early summer from the ripe raspberry up to the black cherry. These notes are enriched by the spiciness coming from the aging in wooden barrels. On the palate plenty of ripe fruity aromas guarantee an unforgettable joy of drinking.
