Villány grand tasting at riverside Intercontinental

The last grandiose tasting of the winter will showcase more than 70 wines from Villány in fabulous setting. Villány wine region is not far from the river Danube, it is situated on the south of Hungary and have a mediterranean climate. On 27 February the winemakers will head north to the capital of Hungary, and present their wines in luxurious Intercontinental, a hotel overlooking the Danube. Besides the walk around tasting, two lectures await guests freeof charge: one about the new community brand of Villány, RedY presented by István Ipacs Szabó, winemaker of Vylyan, and another about the elegant, complex and exciting Cabernet Franc varietal wines of Villány called Villányi Franc. This latter tutored tasting is held by András Horkay WSET dip expert, CEO of CEWI wine school.

Montenouvo 2017, Vylyan Vineyard and Winery

Though in his lecture István Ipacs Szabó will present RedY, the easy drinking, bistrot style wines of Villány, he is capable of great, elegant, complex wines as well, Montenuovo is one of these masterpieces. „Dark fruity notes and the spiciness of cocoa powder feels overwhelming on the palate, but with proportionate and soft tannins and refreshing acidity.”

Villányi Franc Selection 2015, Gere Tamás & Zsolt Winery

The most famous varietal wine of Villány is simply unmissable, and if you can taste just some of them, Gere Tamás & Zsolt Villányi Franc should be included. The grape comes from some of the best vineyards of Villány: Várerdő, Kopár and Csillagvölgy vineyards. „Elegance and subtlety with a touch of charm from Villány. Serious body and structure, pleasant acidity and harmony make the experience unforgettable.”

Bock Cuvée, 2012, Bock Cellar

Villány is famous for its complex wine with long ageing potential, and one of the most enthusiastic missionary of long aged wine is József Bock, owner of Bock Cellar. He even named his restaurant ’Óbor’, which means ’Old Wine’ to express his passion of matured wines. When tasting this 7 year old wine, you will be surprised to see how much energy it contains. The cellar’s flagship wine is a blend of Bordeaux wines: Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Cabernet Franc (30%) and Merlot (10%). It is matured first for 24 months in new, small oak barrels after which it develops further for at least another year in bottles. „Characterized by shades of deep dark red tending to crimson. It is a velvety, full-bodied wine: in its bouquet can be sensed ripe cherries and tobacco, while in flavour chocolate and vanilla appear alongside overripe fruit.
