7 wines you must taste at VinCE Budapest Wine Show
April 5–7, Budapest, Hungary
The 3 day exhibition showcasing quality Hungarian wineries has been organized 8 times and has become one of the most prestigious wine events of the world, undoubtedly the most important in Central Eastern Europe. Speakers like Jancis Robinson MW, Steven Spurrier, Gary Vaynerchuck, Marhese Piero Antinori, Miguel Torres, Warren Winiarski attracted thousands of wine professionals and winelovers during the past eight editions. For the 9th edition in 2018 VinCE makes a big step: the venue changes from the glamorous five star hotel in busy Pest side of the capital to a historic and newly restored group of buildings in Buda side. The new venue called Castle Garden promises to give a historic touch to the event, which will keep the most important aspects, for example the presence of selected quality wineries, and some exciting masterclasses with iconic Champagne houses – this year Champagne Charles Heidsieck will be poured on the first day. Lajvér Wine Estate, Szekszárd, Stand 1
The winery has just changed all its labels, the new design is even fresher than the previous ones. Clear, fruity, lovely wines made with controlled, state of art technology. Taste their Cuvée Blanc, an unusual blend of Sauvignon Blanc and indigenous aromatic Cserszegi Fűszeres.
Dobosi Winery, Balatonfüred–Csopak, Stand 2
Dobosi is a family winery cultivating their vineyards organically. Their Triangle Olaszrizling (Welshriesling) is a single vineyard wine, for which half of the wine was kept on the lees. Silky texture, zesty acidity, nice balance, oaky tones, charming character, long finish.
Babarczi Winery, Pannonhalma, Stand 33
Another family winery from the small Pannonhalma wine region. Zsuzsanna Babarczi, a young and ambitious lady will surely offer the new vintage wines, for example their crispy, fruity rosé and their juicy, grapey, unforgettable white wine made of 100% indigenous Irsai Olivér grape.
Etyeki Kúria, Etyek, Stand 35
The winery is well known for their elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines, however recently they place more and more emphasis on their vineyards in Sopron wine region, therefore they have launched their Sopron brand with single varietal wines. Kékfrankos from 2015 has intense nose with sour cherry, blackberry and plum, while the palate is characterized by juicy fruitiness and firm acidity. Medium body and great length.
Tornai Winery, Somló, Stand 43
Tornai Winery has numerous international acknowledgements, for example the International Wine Challenge Trophy – in 3 consecutive years! Taste their wines indigenous Somló grapes, for example their Aranyhegy Juhfark, a true terroir wine.
Patricius Wine House, Tokaj, Stand 50
The Tokaj estate has recently been awarded a prestigious award: their 6 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú was named the 4th Best Sweet wine of the World! Their Muscat Lunel is a must to try: the aromatic, popular grape made into a super elegant, gracious, stunning dry wine. They also make a méthode traditionelle sparkling wine – Patricius Brut – of the three Tokaj grapes: Furmint, Hárslevelű and Yellow Muscat.
Thummerer Winery, Eger, Stand 69
Vilmos Thummerer, owner of this prestigious family winery has been awarded Winemaker of the Year in 1995. However the real merit is that Thummerer wines have been on the top of the charts ever since he started to make wine. Their Bikavér Superior (Bull’s Blood) is trully one of the best in the country.
