3 superb Tokaji wines to celebrate Aszú Day on 10 December

Tokaji Aszú is a dangerous potion. If you ever taste it, you will be enchanted. If you visit Hungary, especially Tokaj, and immerse deep in this magnificent wine, there is no escape. I know, I am a „Knight of Tokaj”, and I am serius about spreading the word. Just like Laurie MacKay from Canada or Fiona Beckett from the UK.

Laurie MacKay is a wine writer and also works for a radio channel. She participated in our Hungarianwine.eu study tour last August, and see what happened: now she is seeking the opportunity to promote Hungarian wines in Canada. Read her story here on Culinaire magazine. And Fiona Beckett, the guru of food and wine pairing? She came to Hungary a few years ago to VinCE Budapest Wine Show, of which I was chief organizer back then. She was delighted by the wines tasted in Hungary. Read her recent food recommendations for Aszú Day. And me? As I said, I am a „Knight of Tokaj”. Does it mean anything apart from the photos taken when I was wearing weird, ancient robe at the ceremony? Much more, indeed. I take every occasion to spread the words about these drops of God. And not only words, but wines when I can, and recommendations for example now. It is still time to grab a bottle of Tokaji Aszú so that you can celebrate the International Aszú Day properly on 10th December!

Béres Vineyard and Winery

The name Béres is familiar to every Hungarian – professzor Béres invented Béres drops, an immune protecting medication made of trace minerals. Many people use it every day, and with this history no wonder that Béres family founded a winery as well, in Tokaj, where Aszú wines contain almost as many trace minerals as Béres drops. Béres 5 puttonyos Tokaji Aszú 2011 is a bottle of miracle, too: „Golden colour, incredibly concentrated, intense bouquet. Giving it time, we can experience the different notes coming from the glass, one after the other: honey, spices and roastednuts. On the palate we can realize that – due the vintage – acids make it vibrant even tough it has a significant sugar content. We can detect the aromas resulted from maturation as well: date, candied citrus fruits, autumn leaves and spices fill the mouth. A wine for special occasions.”
