Bud Wine 2023: the winners of the first Budapest Airport contest
321 wines were tasted at the very first wine competition of Budapest Airport. The recently upgraded airport– Bud Airport has just received 4 star qualification – will use the 4 selected wines for events and gifts for business partners. One of the 4 winners is the star of our cover photo, Béres Lőcse Furmint 2017 from Tokaj.
Bud Airport among the best ones
There are just a few 5 star airports around the world in the ratings of Skaytrax, even fewer in Europe – only Istanbul, Munich and Rome Fuimicino. Budapest Airport with the newly awarded 4th star belongs to prestigious group with airports like London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schipol. Among the reasons for Skaytrax mentions the short waiting time at the security check: “Budapest Airport allows customers to retain electronic devices in their hand luggage for security processing, and this means that the airport has average waiting times of less than 5-minutes for departures.”
The new wine contest is another extra feature of the airport which already has a very good wine selection in two shops, as we wrote earlier here and here.

The fruit of Lőcse vineyard
Erdőbénye is a magical village, a tiny commune with great power within UNESCO World Heritage Tokaj wine region. Lőcse vineyard surrounds the winery building of Béres Vineyards and gives the finest and most exciting Furmint of the the estate.
This single vineyard wine is made of the selected crop of the Furmint parcels of Lőcse vineyard. After very gentle pressing must was left to settle for overnight. Fermentation in new oak and ageing in 2 and 5 hL barrels with different levels of toasting made of local sessile oak (from Erdőbénye village) for 6 months. Due to constant stirring of the lees – bâtonnage – and the process of micro-oxygenation the wine developed its round, mineral, harmonious personality retaining the characters of the vineyard. After the maturation period the team tasted each and every barrel to select the best ones used for the blending of the final wine. And the result?
“Lemon colour. Sniffing into the glass we can detect yellow flesh fruits along with the toasty notes of barrel ageing. The aromas reminiscent of apple and peach besides the flavours of vanilla and spices together give complex and layered palate. This single vineyard Furmint boasts unique minerality and vibrant acidity. Serious extract, full body – a developed wine lingering in our month for a long time.”
