Gere Winery
Gere Attila Winery is a family enterprise started in 1991 and now one of the most important wineries in Hungary. Attila Gere – originally a forester, and the owner of the company – received the Hungarian Wine Maker of the Year title in 1994. The internationally acknowledged winery’s wines compete with the most famous French wines and known not only in Europe but also present on Asian and American markets.
Their belief is that the vine must develop under the most natural circumstances to absorb the richness of the soil and give a really great wine. That’s why the winery commits itself toward the organic cultivation. Excellent wine can be made only from healthy grape. The winery farms on 70 hectares in such excellent slopes of Villány wine region as Kopár, Konkoly, Ördögárok and Csillagvölgy. Some of the grown varieties: portugieser, bluefrankisch, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, syrah, tempranillo, etc. During the processing of the selected grape grown with strict yield limitation it is the most important to perfectly keep the values lurking in the fruit. To achieve this the winery alloy the modern wine making technology with the traditions of Villány deliberately.
In 2002 the modern winery facility was built and here the most modern wine making technology is used.
Furthermore a 4 star hotel (Gere Crocus Wine Hotel) and a gourmet restaurant (Mandula) are also parts of the Gere wine experience since 2008.
Attila Gere (Pécs, 1954) Hungarian oenologist. Owner of Wine Maker of the Year title (1994) and the Knight Cross of the Hungarian Republic (2001). With his world class winery he is one of the most popular wine makers of Villány wine region.
He started his career being a forester for 17 years. He moved to Villány in 1978 and there he and his wife, Katalin, started to grow grapes in the Csillagvölgy slope. This first vineyard was only a few acres. They received the area as a wedding present from their parents. Attila still worked in forestry then but he also produced and sold wine. It was the vintage of 1986 that first went to stores in bottles. Though he got in touch with wine making through his marriage, in his family wine making has a tradition back to eight generations. His great grandparents were wine makers in Villány.
Gere, after giving up his original job, launched out on the family enterprise in 1991 which is today one of the most well-known wineries. After years of hard work, the winery is proud to call its own some 70 hectares of superb grounds in the slopes of Kopár, Konkoly, Csillagvölgy and Ördögárok. Some of the grown varieties: Portugieser, Blaufrankisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Tempranillo, etc.
Besides the family estate, a joint venture was established in 1992 hand in hand with Franz Weninger, Austrian winemaker.
Attila Gere’s belief is that the vine must develop under the most natural circumstances to absorb the richness of the soil and give a really great wine. The most known and superior grade wines of the winery are Kopar Cuvée (the flagship wine), Solus and Attila Cuvée that also prove themselves on international competitions.
