Mátra Wine Saloon on 17 February
Tasting with 25 wineries
Mátra is the second largest wine region of Hungary, and also the largest mountainous wine region with volcanic soil. The town of Gyöngyös, the capital of Mátra is only an hour’s drive from Budapest, and though the town itself needs some development, the surrounding mountains are ideal for hikers. What is more, the estates here are mostly run buy young, ambitious winemakers, thus Mátra is definitely one of our most dynamic regions. Refreshing, juicy aromatic wines, exciting single vinyard, complex whites, vibrant, fruit driven red wines – Mátra has everything to be trendy. Visit Mátra and discover its great wines!

3 Mátra wineries
Visitors can taste wines from 25 wineries of Mátra wine region. Now let us introduce the producers of the wines on our cover photo.
Dominium Winery
A family winery with Tamás Orbán taking good care of the vineyard, and Dániel Orbán, the experimenting spirit, who makes the wines. The are a so called athypical estate with varieties less typical of Mátra: Furmint (of which they make orange wine as well), Tempranillo or Fekete Leányka (Feteasca Neagra, important in Romania). “Staying true to nature is the core of our philosophy, both with regard to viniculture and in the process of making quality wine. We do not trust the fancy “panaceas of winemaking”, however, we firmly believe that the grapevine will repay the care we put into its cultivation with fine grapes. We do not consider ourselves a bio winery, but we are striving to come as close to its methods as possible.” If you decide to take part in the tasting, Dominium is a great place to stay for the night. The view from the sauna is unbeatable.

Dubicz Winery and Vineyard
Again a family with two ladies, mother and daughter. Though the estate building is under renovation, it is highly worth visiting to see the large underground cellar, the lovely little museum, where you can learn a lot from Mátra, or it is also worth participating in one of the exciting tasting sessions. Tasting & painting, escape room, e-quad tour – unmissable! “Our family has been the owner of the winery since 2003. We truly believe in hard work and make decisions as a team helping each other. In case of every vintage, we bottle the very best of our heart, soul and professional knowledge. Our offering includes traditional wines made from white grape varieties that make everyone enchanted from those loving light flavors to gourmets.”
The single vineyard wines from Sárhegy vineyard (Olaszrizling and Kékfrankos) are outstanding, it is a must to taste them.

Sol Montis Winery
A family winery as well, with a lady gradually taking over the management from her father. The estate is a lovely, modern building surrounded by vineyards, ideal for a wedding or other events. The portfolio of the winery is pretty large divided into three lines. Blending is important here, a playground for father and daughter. “The surrounding scenery is a true miracle of nature, our personal mission therefore is to create noble wines that embody the most characteristic features of this area. We look after more than 100 hectares of grape at the tame feet of the hills, with utmost care and professional expertise that combines the respect for ancient winemaking traditions with fresh, youthful dynamism.”
