A place to get „elegantly tipsy”

Szalonspicc Café and Winebar, Budapest

“The whole world is three drinks behind. If everyone in the world would take three drinks, we would have no trouble” – said Humphrey Bogart in 1950, and this quotation is read on the wine list of Szalonspicc. (“If Stalin, Truman and everybody else in the world had three drinks right now, we’d all loosen up and we wouldn’t need the United Nations” – continues Bogart.) Speaking about the sparkling season, it’s a must to mention one of Budapest’s best winebars: Szalonspicc! The place is not new at all, has been open for almost a decade (since 2009), but it’s constantly among the top ranked places, for example this year’s Magyar Konyha (Hungarian Kitchen) magazine’s Top Gastro Spots ranked Szalonspicc the 3rd best winebar in Hungary. The name „Szalonspicc” is a special term for a state of mind after a few glasses of wine, when a person is not drunk, just „elegantly tipsy”.

From breakfast till the last drink of the day

Szalonspicc is usually open from 12 to midnight, serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and between the meals you can drop in for a coffee. Meals are simple but delicious burgers, sandwiches, salads, and the best is that you can choose between at least 60 types of wine and 15 sparkling wines by the glass. Most of them are from carefully selected Hungarian wineries, but the international sortiment is also worth choosing from.

Some recommendations from the wine list

The first rosé méthode traditionelle sparkling was made in 2017 by Kreinbacher Estate. Firm and precise structure with refreshing citrus aromas like grapefruit and lime, red-currant, strawberry. Despite its distinct acidity, this rosé is easy to drink, quite rich and pleases the palate with a creamy mousse.

A blend of Királyleányka and Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris). Vibrant fruity nose with flowery notes. Pear and grapefruit on the palate. Fresh, pleasant acidity that gives structure and freshness to the wine. A lovely, vivid wine with long finish.

The linden notes typical of this interesting grape variety are paired with the vanilla aromas from the barrel aging. Lovely, long finish.
