An ideal weekend escape: tasting + spa
The event is held in Hotel Gellért in Buda, this historic building is the second most important hotel regarding wine events. Apart from the annual St Martin Wine Festival, several other tastings are organised within the old walls. The hotel has a dreamlike location: by the bank of the river Danube, just under Gellért hill. Gellért Spa is situated next door, therefore it would make sense to combine the tasting with a night in the hotel with a wellness day after. Hangover will quickly disappear in the romantic pools of Gellért.
15 wine regions, 50 wineries, 100 wines
Since Kékfrankos is the most widely planted grape in Hungary, 15 wine regions out of the 22 will be represented at the event. Besides two masterclasses will give deeper insight into the secularities of the variety:
– Jubilee Kékfrankos – 35 years in Eger wine region (by Katalin Tóth from 35 year old Tóth Ferenc Winery and György Markovics)
– Blaufränkisch from the other side of Neusiedler lake (Austria) (by András Kálmán, owner of KisBécs wine bar and store)
Some wines you must not miss
Csányi Winery, Chateau Teleki Kékfrankos, 2015
This wine marks a milestone of the winery: this is the first vintage which was made after the arrival of the new general manager, László Romsics. The wine gained a Berliner Trophy gold medal so far. Fully ripened red fruits, mainly cherry and sour cherry. A touch of oakiness. Rich fruitiness on the palate with zesty acidity. Soft, integrated tannins. Complex, exciting wine, yet easy to drink.
The winery has just started to place greater emphasis on their vineyards in Sopron wine region, and the new, Sopron family is more than promising! Intense sour cherry, blackberry and plum on the nose, while the palate is characterized by juicy fruitiness and firm acidity. Medium body and great length.
The event will showcase Kékfrankos based blends as well, thus you can expect several Bikavér wines – these blends are usually based on Kékfrankos.
Deep ruby colour. Gorgeous aromas of intense red and black berries, elegant minerality and lots of spices that make this wine enjoyable! The palate is complex, concentrated with breezy acids and ripe tannins. Long, mineral, fruity finish. Growing wine with great aging potential!
