„ThousandGood” news: British sommeliers like Ezerjó!
The results of Sommelier Wine Awards competition in London has just been released. As the contest organizers say: „SWA is the only competition to be aimed solely at the on-trade. Judged by a panel of top leading sommeliers and on-trade drinks buyers, the competition rewards the best wines available to restaurants, bars and hotels in the UK and beyond.”
Gold for a Frittmann Ezerjó
Hungary has wone one gold with the great Frittmann Ezerjó, Kunság, 2015
Here is the evaluation of the wine by the judges: „Packed with zesty fruit and floral notes, this Gold Lister had a ‘good citrus kick’, said team leader Martin Lam, also noting its ‘leesy then floral nose and a pretty, dry yet floral palate’, while Jacopo Mazzeo of The Pig Hotel (Brockenhurst) found ‘apple, citrus and floral aromas, and a crisp, fragrant palate’. ‘Pair with a prawn terrine served with crab claws and citrus jelly,’ suggested Matthieu Longuère MS of Le Cordon Bleu London.”
The wine is available in the United Kingdom by Malux Hungarian Food and Wine.
Ezerjó – an underestimated variety
Literally Ezerjó means ‘Thousand Good’, and it used to be one of the most common varieties in Hungary, well known throughout the Carpathian Basin. Nowadays it is almost totally restricted to one wine region, named Mór, but Frittmann in Kunság wine region grows Ezerjó as well. The small region of Mór is proud of the grape and its winemakers produce more and more remarkable wines from this lesser known and lesser respected grape. The wine made of Ezerjó has pale, greenish colour. Restrained on the nose, slightly aromatic. Light body, easy drinking, juicy with high acidity. Frittmann Ezerjó is matured in oak barrel for eight months, and it gives creaminess to the wine.
