Thummerer Winery
The uniqueness of our winery comes from our dedication to quality and from the success of several generations working together. It all started in 1984, when our family bought the first vineyards in Eger wine region. The base area has grown over the years, so now we have around 100 hectares. Since 2013 we have been able to make – not just wines, but also traditional method sparkling wines.
Our passion is to make the best possible quality by combining traditional techniques and state-of-the-art machinery. We need to maintain the standard of the quality of our wines – or bring it to an even higher level. We believe that this mentality has helped us through all these years, and that is the main reason why we could be successful not just in our country, but in the international market as well.
A unique cellar carved by hand
The centre of our winery is located in Noszvaj, a lovely village only 12 km far from Eger. The base construction – which was once built as an estate manor, and was 2000 m2 already –was carved out by hand into the volcanic tuff mountain, more than a century ago. Through the years, we extended that old cellar with another 2200 m2 cellar system. To keep the method, it is also carved into the volcanic tuff hill, but this time with a machine. This balanced temperature inside provides the best conditions for the fermentation and ageing of our wines.
From the youthful to the aged, full-bodied wines
Thanks to our vineyards, we can produce wines of both white and black grapes. We believe that we should choose the optimal grape for the soil to get the best quality as possible. From planting to picking, we love to take our place in the process. We have all the materials and devices that we need to turn the ripened grapes into something magical.
Most of our white wines are made with reductive technology and controlled fermentation, but some of our wines are fermented in barrique (Chardonnay Battonage, Egri Csillag Superior). We believe that our main profile is the red, dry, full-bodied wine. To create these wines, we leave the grapes on the skin for 2–4 weeks. That process is usually followed by 1.5–2 years of oak barrel ageing (for example Bikavér Classicus, Bikavér Superior, Bikavér Grand Superior) and before selling, we keep them in bottles for at least half a year. Most of the red wines are aged in barrique (Vili Papa Cuvée, Evoé Cuvée, Tekenőháti Merlot), but we also have fruity, young, reductive wines in the market.
Family and familiar team
The founders of the estate were Vilmos Thummerer with his wife, Katalin. Every leader of the management is a family member: three children, grandchildren, sons-in-law, and daughters-in-law all together.
Due to the wild variety of possibilities, everyone found his own way to contribute to the success of the winery with dedication and passion. We believe that without our 30 stabile employees and our head winemaker, József Lamport – who has been helping us since 2004 with his outstanding competence – we could not be where we are now.

Egri Chardonnay Batonnage 2023
If you are thinking of elegant white wines, Chardonnay must be one of the first wines that comes to your mind. We wanted to carry on this worldwide known image, actually, in an even better form. This year – thanks to our vineyards – the grapes became flavourful and well matured.
Egri Bikavér Classicus 2020
Ruby color, rich, spicy and smooth tannins. Reminiscent of redcurrant on the nose complementing the wonderful fragrance resulted from the barrel fermentation.
Egri Bikavér Grand Superior ‘Nagy-Eged dűlő’ 2021
Our highest quality Egri Bikavér wine, with every step of the process planned well in advance: in 2008 we planted the grapes in one of our best vineyards, with the actual proportion of the components.
Egri Bikavér Superior 2021
We added Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to the Kékfrankos base. Full-bodied red wine with aromas of fruits and spices. Made only in the best vintages.
Egri Kadarka Grand Superior 2015
The wine has the typical „Kadarka” tone in its colour, and the charming nose is also characteristic of the variety. Exciting and unique palate, long ageing potential.
Vili Papa Cuvée Superior 2016
This prestige wine was made only in the best vintages for more than two decades. Our extremely dark red wine will appeal to any gourmet consumer who is open to the world of great French-style red wines. The intense nose is followed by a fruity and spicy palate, with some sweetish tones.
