When a label tells not only a story, but history! ’Fortress Defender’ from Eger
Ferenc Tóth has been making wine all his life just like his ancestors in Eger, one of the coolest town of Hungary. The symbol of the city is the fortress, which has a story that makes our heart beat with passion: the defenders of the castle could defeat the fierce Turkish troops and stop their invasion for 40 years. Their heroic defence is depicted in the most loved novel of Hungarian people, the Stars of Eger by Géza Gárdonyi, and a movie was made of the novel as well.
Ferenc Tóth has a passion for his hone town, thus he dedicated his flagship wine to those heros, whose bravery changed our history, and whith whom this tiny nation could experience freedom and independence.
The wine Várvédő (Fortress Defender) is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir, and made only in the best vintages. 2011 was an outstanding vintage in Eger. The grape was hand picked from three vineyards: Síkhegy, Almagyar and Tihamér. The base wines were aged in traditional oak barrel for 21months. After choosing the best of them, they blended the wines and put back into barrel for further 3 months. Then it was aged in bottle for an additional 6 months. The spicy and fruity, full bodied wine pairs well with roasted lamb or game dishes. The wine was awarded gold at VinAgora Internationall Wine Contest in 2016, and was selected to be among the Top 100 Hungarian wines. 1800 bottles are still available at merely 16,10 euros!
