Evelyne’s Choice – new vintage Heumann rosé
Kékfrankos–Syrah blend from Villány–Siklós
A blend of 50% Kékfrankos and 50% Syrah from the Siklós vineyards of Heumann Winery (Villány wine region) is one of the favourite wines of Evelyne Heumann, co-owner of the estate. It is a joker for food, es Erhard Heumann commented: it pairs well “with pasta with almost any sauce, roast chicken, salami, pizza, hard cheeses, Asian food – this rosé is an all-rounder!”
UK rosé lovers, a reason to come!
Heumann Winery produces two different rosé wines, one for The Wine Society in the United Kingdom and another one. The grapes come from the same vineyard called Városhegy (meaning Towns’ Hill), which has mainly loess soil with quite a high proportion of limestone – this is why the Heumanns can make outstanding Rhine Riesling in the “red Villány”. As Erhard Heumann explained to us, they have two different Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch) clones, and Austrian one and a Hungarian one. “We use mostly the Hungarian clones for the rosé, as they give more fruit-drivenand less tannic wines. From the Syrah we mainly use the younger vines for the rosé.”
Erhard also revealed that the UK blend is slightly different, the proportion of Kékfrankos is higher (70%). If you like it, it is time to visit the Heumanns in Siklós, and taste the difference.
Harvested on the last day of the summer
2022 was a rather difficult year for rosé and white wines as it was very hot and sunny, “however, we managed to keep the fruit and the acidity.” The grapes were harvested on the very last day of the summer, summer must have kissed those berries to say goodbye. Evelyne’s Choice rosé has bright salmon colour, charming nose abundant in sour cherries and this fruity character appears on the palate as well. Full bodied, vibrant acidity (6.1 g/L) and long lasting.
Meet the Heumanns on 8-9-10 September in Budapest!
Újpest is a fairly modern suburb of Budapest, where an annual wine festival is held with quite an impressive line upof winery exhibitors. Holdvölgy from Tokaj, Babarczi and Pannonhalma Archabbey Winery from Pannonhalma, Kovács Nimród Winery from Eger and certainly Heumann Winery from Villány – just to name a few.
The event takes place at the same time when Budapest Wine festival is organized in the picturesque Buda Castle. There are two significant differences: Buda Castle is undoubtedly more attractive than the main square in Újpest, however, Újpest Wine Weekend is free of charge to enter as opposed to the Buda tasting.
The website is in Hungarian, but Google can help.
