A.– a letter with a family story

The winery founded by Attila Gere now bears the name A.Gere, signifying the handover: Attila still enjoys tasting the grapes before the harvest, but today the winery is run by his daughter, Andrea, and her husband, Kristóf Csizmadia. The younger generation is actively responding to the challenges of the 21st century, whilst also placing great emphasis on preserving their Swabian roots, which is reflected in the interior design and cuisine of the renewed restaurant (we wrote here about the renewal).

“The only way I can describe it is that this is a grape born angry. Tasting Juhfark for the first time is like meeting a little Celtic warrior, stone spear and rough pewter blade thrust in your face with the smell of woad and clay and rain and cold and sulphur up your nostrils.”

Juhfark, the sheep’s tail

Juhfark takes its name from the sheep’s tail, as the long cylindrical shape of the bunches resemble the sheep’s tail. It is often cited as the ‘wines of the wedding-night’, since it was believed to help when a couple had been longing for a son. (The myth is debunked, see below.)
Juhfark is grown almost exclusively in the small volcanic hill of Somló, a small amount in Balatonfüred.
Rather neutral, restrained nose with some flowers and green apples. High, sometimes brutal acidity. It is really difficult to tame this variety, but there are amazing examples of it in history! If you are not afraid of straightforward acidity, take a chance on it. In Somló, the minerality paired with high acidity results some outstanding wines with great ageing potential.

Read Eric Danch’s (Danch & Granger Selection, US) about his Somló tour and about his Juhfark experiences

The myth is debunked, but Juhfark is forever!

Cornflowers in the field of wheat – Búzavirág Foundation

The 10 ladies choose a different charity target every year, and this year it is ‘Búzavirág’ (‘Cornflower’) foundation, which provides independent housing and meaningful employment for people who have grown up without families, have reduced working capacity, or are visually impaired. In their craft workshops, the residents use traditional folk techniques to make unique woven baskets, rugs and Sárospatak-style ceramics, whilst their own market garden ensures sustainability and a daily supply of fruit and vegetables.

“In March, we visited Vámosújfalu in person to meet the foundation’s director, Márta Németh. I was captivated by the professional humility and love with which she guides the residents’ meaningful daily lives. They are the colourful cornflowers amidst the daily hustle and bustle of the wheat fields; our mission is to support them through the power of Tokaj wines. I particularly liked the fact that, during the summer camps for children and throughout the year for school classes and groups, they offer opportunities to do crafts alongside artisans living with disabilities, where participants not only create wonderful treasures but also learn about cooperation and acceptance through play.”

The 10 ladies in alphabetical order:
Angelika Árvay (Árvay Family Winery), Marianna Bodnár (Kalina Cooperage), Edit Kulcsúr (Demetervin), Viktória Halász (Halász Confectionery), Dr. Gabriella Mészáros (DipWSET, wine writer, Borkalauz), Gabriella Palkó (Palkó Wines), Melinda Rózsáné Szloboda (Rózsa Winery), Gabriella Szepsy (Szepsy Winery), Adrienn Tóbiás (Adrienne Deluxe), Kata Zsirai (Zsirai Winery)

Feind wines are available in several countries, for example in the US by Credo Imports and in Denmark by PaTrioVin. If you are interested in their wines, contact Andrea Sajó.

How did you hear about the Winelovers Wine Awards and why did you decide to enter?
We have been entering this competition for a while, the feedback of the serious professional jury of the WWA is very important to us. International competitions are generally important to us, which is why we regularly enter the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Berliner Wine Trophy, but we are also always present at the Hungarian National Wine Competition.

A real shower of medals fell on you, 10 medals, wow! Knowing the jury members and seeing the rigor, this is very serious! Which of your results are you most proud of?

First of all, for the fact that 10 of the 10 nominated wines received medals! This is the first year that all our wines performed so well, we are very proud of it, especially seeing the line-up of professionals. We are perhaps most proud of the gold-medal 2021 Merlot, a truly special wine that is not produced in every vintage, but only in the best years. The same wine received a gold medal at the National Wine Competition (2025), the VinAgora (2024) and the Berliner Wine Trophy (2026), while an earlier vintage, 2019 won gold medal at the Asian Wine Trophy.
It is also a great pleasure that our new Bollicine product line also brought such excellent results. These light aerated sparkling wines replaced the Play product line, the word bollicine means little bubble, and our Bollicine wines were well received by both the industry and the public.

Did you announce your results in some form? Have you shared them somewhere?
Of course, we always inform our resellers about the competition results, and our customers and followers learn about our successes on Instagram and Facebook. We primarily communicate gold medals, of course, we are also happy with silver and bronze medals, but we consider these to be more important professional feedback.

Has there been any concrete result of the successes? Any inquiry, perhaps Auchan selection or other?
Absolute! The above mentioned Feind Merlot will be included in Auchan’s Christmas wine selection! If you want to put it under the Christmas tree, you should make an effort, because we only have 3,000 bottles left, and the next vintage will be 2025, which is still resting in the cellar.
But success has a concrete, tangible result, as a commercial director I can say that for sure. These successes are also felt in the sales of Metro and Lidl stores, but also in our webshop and wine shop.

The laziest Sunday lunch is actually a dinner. Why not getting up late, having breakfast in bed (with sparkling wine, of course), and enjoy a relaxed dinner with a special twist? Caviar & Bull offers several degustation menus, one of them features plates from around the world, and they actually take us to the remote places. The first stop is obviously Budapest and foie gras.

The best way to survive: decrease prices

The best way at least for us, restaurant goers. Life is not easy, Hungary has a new government, but after the mindless waste of money of the previous regime, it will take time to recover economy. Several restaurants have closed or reduced the number of opening hours, or in more cases, the opening days. Caviar & Bull is open every day for dinner (from 5 pm to 11 pm), and their recent news is that they have lowered the prices.

Caviar & Bull, sea & steak

The name of the restaurant may be familiar for world travellers, because there is a sister restaurant in Malta with the same name. The founder chef is Marvin Gauci, a multi-award winner chef, and he brought his concept to Budapest as well: the highest quality treasures from the seas of the world along with premium meats for meat lovers. Guests can enjoy a sea food menu (called Caviar tasting menu) and a meat menu (called Bull tasting menu), both for less than 30 000 HUF / 82 EUR. It may still sound high enough, but remember, you are in the heart of a capital, and all the ingredients are of high quality.
More about Caviar & Bull Budapest

Travel through five countries with sounds and visuals

Uncensored is a restaurant within the restaurant, a special room where guests can enjoy a unique experience. The courses are:
– Hungary: duck liver, apricot, mangalica ham, roasted onion, sourdough bread
– Russia: oyster, caviar, vodka granita, dill, fermented cucumber, pickled shallot
– China: tea-smoked seabass, spring onion, ginger, soy sauce, fermented pear, rice bread, crispy prawn
– USA: rib eye, spiced popcorn, BBQ sauce, corn, potato-bacon-cheddar croquette
– Brasil: banana mousse, banana jam, passion fruit, coconut cream, hazelnut
This concept is also imported by Marvin Gauci, but now it is Hungarian hands, chef Dávid Borbély is in charge. The seating is at 7.30 pm, available on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The price of the menu is 25 900 HUF / approximately 70 EUR, so it costs even less than the Caviar or the Bull menus. (Though 15% service charge is added to the final bill.)

When a “diet woman” can’t resist the temptation of a dessert

I have had the chance to try one of the degustation menus of Caviar & Bull. It was a Wednesday, therefore The Journey Degustation was not available, so I went for the Kaviar menu, since I adore sea food. It was a magnificent series of dishes, for me the two highlights were the fresh bluefin tuna (with avocado, lemon gel, mint and pickled chili) served in crispy cones, and the basil poached meagre with champagne velouté (and gnocchi, black olive crumble and caponata). I try to skip desserts, but I could not resist the temptation this time: the “Citrus Harmony” was so refreshing, featherlight, layered and sophisticated, I loved it! According to menu it had puff pastry, orange & star anise white chocolate namelaka, vanilla orange gel, citrus ragout, white chocolate & citrus espuma, lime crumble and Moroccan citrus ice cream. (Telling the truth, I had no idea what namelaka is, but here is what I have found: “The term Namelaka comes from Japan and it’s literal meaning is ultra creamy / extremely creamy. The namelaka is very delicate, and surprises those who have the pleasure of tasting it. It is similar to a white chocolate ganache, but also a white chocolate mousse, and is a very special cream that contains no eggs or flour!”

Oak aged Chardonnay from Pannonhalma

The cover photo was taken by the Michelin recommended Hoppá Bistro in Budapest, see more below. Sirius from Babarczi Vineyard and Winery in Pannonhalma is a 100% Chardonnay with gentle oak ageing and a wine abundant in juicy white fruit notes.

Sirius, the brightest star

The Babarczi family loves Latin names, just look at their top red wines: Marianum (Cabernet Franc) and Aeternum (Bordeaux blend). Sirius refers to the brightest star in the sky, and though the word comes from Greek, Sirius is closer to the Latin spelling. “Sirius is gradually moving closer to the Solar System and it is expected to increase in brightness.” Just as Babarczi Sirius is expected to be even brighter with time. “Pale straw-yellow in colour with silver reflections. A beguiling nose of luscious, ripe fruit – pear, mango and melon, a hint of citrus and sweet floral aromas – honeysuckle and acacia – with fresh vegetative notes of hay. Undertones of new wooden barrels. Full in taste, with nicely rounded acids, it fulfills the promise of the aroma – melon, hay and lime minerality with a longer than average finish.”

Hoppá Bistro in Budapest loves Babarczi wines

Hoppá is a trendy and affordable meeting place with consecutive Michelin recommendations since 2021. Michelin Guide introduces the place as follows: “This contemporary eatery stands out amongst the myriad choices on vibrant Október Street, both for its smooth service and its modern, well-presented cooking – and it’s certainly a popular spot. The menu sees traditional Hungarian recipes brought up-to-date, and there’s a range of daily specials and an excellent value lunch menu on offer too. You might find smoked catfish with onions and sesame seeds, followed by veal with bread dumplings and sage, then, for dessert, crème brûlée accompanied by seasonal fruit. Local beers and wines complete the picture.”
Fun fact: “hoppá” is something like “ooops”, but it is also used as “wow”, when we are positively surprised. The team wants to create this “wow” feeling when guests enter.
Recently, there have been a tasting of Babarczi wines, this is when the cover photo was taken. Sirius might not be available now, but Babarczi Merlot is on the wine list right now.

Plus: some stunning harvest photos

As János Frittmann of Frittmann Winery commented in a recent interview, 2026 is probably the worst vintage in the past 50 years regarding quantity. As for quality, what is left, seems to be great and healthy, as the photos taken by the Frittmanns prove it (see photos below). Meet them in the city of Szeged, on 16–20 September, in the picturesque Dóm square!

Miserable and blessed times

Spring frost and hail, summer draught and the spreading disease called ‘grapevine flavescence dorée’ all add up to make winemakers’ life miserable. János Frittmann, who happens to be the president of the Hungarian National Council of the Wine Communities, claims that the crops of vintage 2026 is the worst in the past 40-50 years, especially in Kunság wine region, where the spring frost destroyed 50% of even more of the grapes in some places. Not to mention the decrease of consumption.
Yet, life goes on, the ripened grape has to be picked, there is no time to cry over the spilt milk – and though the quantity is behind the expected, the quality is great with healthy, beautiful bunches in the vineyard and by now mostly in the press and the vats. Frittmann team started this years’ harvest in the middle of August and it still goes on.

“Bor Tér” – the “Wine Square” event in Szeged

The city of Szeged is often dubbed as the city of sunshine, indeed, the south-east city of Hungary has a sunny, warm climate and buzzling life full of university students. The 14th “Wine square” promises to be another cool happening with many wineries from all over the country.

A Hungarian online wine magazine has published an article recently with great examples, what is more, “text book” manifestations of a certain grape variety. When it came to Irsai Olivér variety, the article names Frittmann Irsai Olivér. “Few Hungarian varieties have become super popular as quickly as Irsai Olivér. Fragrant, light, fresh and extremely lovable, it is often simplified as a “simple summer wine”. However, a well-made Irsai is much more than that. Frittmann Winery has been making Irsai Olivér for more than two decades, so it has had plenty of time to perfect its own style. On the characteristic quicksand soil of the Great Hungarian Plain, the variety develops particularly rich aromas, which this wine also perfectly demonstrates. Its intense grape, floral and citrus aromas, freshness and pure character clearly show why Irsai Olivér has become one of the best-known aromatic white grape varieties in the country.”

Vella Terra credo:

“At Vella Terra, we value every winegrower committed to producing wine with the lowest possible level of intervention, and we stand against fake natural wine. We are the only natural wine fair in Spain, and one of the very few in Europe, that requires wine analyses from every exhibitor. We travel to visit wineries and follow one of the strictest participation criteria among natural wine fairs. We believe that until there is clear labelling within the wine sector, and as long as fake natural wine can still be easily sold on the market, those of us who organise fairs like this have a responsibility to provide clarity for the end consumer.”

Csetvei – 100% nature

Well, no wonder the strict wine fair has accepted the application of Csetvei Cellar, they make natural wines, unfiltered and unfined, from grapes from organic vineyards. And why have we mentioned fox in the lead? Well, RAW/ka is a line of wines of the estate, a natural wine line and with a fox as a symbol. The word ‘RAW’ obviously refers to the natural character of the wine, while with the ‘-ka’ suffix together it sounds like the Hungarian “róka” word, meaning fox. Csetvei cellar is located in Mór, but they also have a vineyard in Somló. The main focus in Mór is on Ezerjó, the indigenous grape typical of the region, Krisztina Csetvei has even created Ezerjó Day, celebrated every year on 16 May. Csetvei regularly participate in the Autistic Art project, in which labels are designed by autistic young people, and the money from the sales go to a foundation to help young artists with autism.

What is Junibor?

– Junibor was founded in 2008.
– Currently the president is Pálma Koch, the vice presidents are Ferenc Bujdosó and Zsolt Tiffán, board members: Előd Szíjjártó and Ákos Vabrik.
– It is easy to identify the estate of each winemaker, just look at the surname – the members represent family wineries. Pálma Koch is from Koch Winery, Ferenc Bujdosó is from Bujdosó Winery, etc.
– There are a few exceptions, Sándor Tóth is the chief winemaker of Vylyan Vineyard and Winery, but not a family member of the managing director Flóra Debreczeni.
– Forever young? No, the winemakers can stay in the association until they are 40-year-old. They can apply for membership until they are 35.
– How to become a member? New members are first invited, if the invited accepts the invitation, the members vote.
– What do they do? Tasting events, study tours, educational programmes and more.
– Currently there are 48 members.
