Nearly 30 estates at Daejeon International Wine Expo

220 wineries from 16 countries will present their wines to the members of the South Korean wine trade. Hungary will be represented by nearly 30 wineries from 5 wine regions, organised by Wines of Hungary. Some of the exhibitors: Bock from Villány, Dubicz from Mátra, Etyeki Kúria from Etyek, Heimann & Fiai and Lajver from Szekszárd, Homola from Balaton, Tóth Ferenc from Eger, Tűzkő from Tolna, Zsirai from Tokaj.

Try something new, try Hungarian wines!

Though the wine in South Korea consumption has dropped in the last two years, the country is still considered to be a developing wine market. As there are more and more sophisticated wine connoisseurs, the trend of drinking less, but better helps wines from less known countries, like Hungary. For the adventurous Korean wine drinkers wines made of indigenous Hungarian grapes can be great alternatives to the market dominating Chilean, New Zealand, Italian and French wines.

Taschner – a one-man-show from the west

Kurt István Taschner followed his father’s path, who was a grape grower in Sopron wine region, near the Austrian border, and he made his winery well-known all over Hungary. His Irsai Olivér is usually not only the first to be released in every vintage, but it is also among the best new wines. He works with rare grapes as well, his ‘Korai Piros Veltelini’ is one of the best thirst-quenching wines. Apart from Kékfrankos, the flagship grape of Sopron, he makes red wine from Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is more than interesting to compare his Sauvignon–Franc blend with a similar blend from the south of Hungary. He is one of the very few winemakers, who bottles wines in small bottles.

Lajver – extravaganza from Szekszárd

Lajver Wine House has a wide portfolio with labels from the affordable, easy to drink wines through the exciting experimental projects (like the white Incognito from the black Kékfrankos) to the blockbuster red wines. Lajver Bordeaux blend is called Infinity, and the name reveals the rich personality of the wine: “Berries and ripe raspberries are present in a sip; elegant barrel notes, sweet spices, roasted notes, a pleasant tannin feel make it meaningful. It has strength, firmness, fruit and spice, and long-lasting flavours.
Lajver Blanc de Blancs Brut 2019

A decade ago a winery portfolio including a sparkling wine was rare to find – like a white raven as we say. Thanks to some change in the legislation wineries are now allowed to make sparkling wine and more and more of them realize that a bubbly in the range is a must. Finally Lajver Wine House followed suit and we are more than happy about it!

The decision was born in 2019. Lajver has 12 terraces at different altitudes and different exposures to the sun. For the sparkling the team chose the cooler one of the two Chardonnay terraces. The hand sorted grapes were pressed in whole bunches, and after controlled fermentation the base wine had some winter sleep while malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously. Tirage and bottling was carried on in March 2020 and after two and a half years of ageing on the lees they did the first disgorgement on the 3rd of November. The dosage is only 6 g/l, so it almost bone dry. As Rebeka Vida, the chief winemaker of Lajver described: “The notes of the 2.5 years ageing on the lees are more present on the nose with bread crust and toast, while the palate is more on the fruity side with citrus fruits and green apple. When tasting, we can also enjoy the complexity besides the fruitiness. Abundant in bubbles, refreshing acidity, long finish. Surprisingly enough there is a hint of petrol in the aftertaste.”

Why is the disgorgment date so important?

The bottle fermented sparkling wines gain their complex aromas from the lees. In some places the “lees” is called the “mother” of the sparkling wine. The sparkling wine develops only when it is in contact with the lees, thus the shorter you keep it after disgorgement, the better it is. Always look for the disgorgement date! The general rule is to drink a sparkling wine as soon as you can, and do not keep it longer than two years after the disgorgement.

Let’s have carnival with Lajver Incognito! While anglo-saxon folks are busy with their Valentine cards, the latin world suffers from standing still – it is time to dance! If Covid had not ruined our lives, now the streets of Rio de Janeiro would be full of extravagant costumes, hot dancers. The biggest festival of the world is cancelled, so let us have carnival at home – with Incognito from Lajver Wine Estate, a very special wine indeed from Szekszárd wine region!

An irregular Kékfrankos / Blaufrankisch

Did you know that the Carnival of Rio started as early as 1723? Now it is really the largest event of this kind with 2 million people on the streets per day! The date is always adjusted to Easter, to the beginning of Lent. The Carnival of Venice might be older, but its recent history started in 1979 – and this year the Carnival of Venice is cancelled, too.

So why Incognito? Because it is a Kékfrankos ‘in incognito’ – black grape vinified into white wine. The idea belongs to Attila Nagy, the consultant winemaker and viticulturist of Lajver, therefore the label bears his signature. Blanc de noir wines are sometimes clumsy and tannic, but Incognito is balanced and refreshing, great result of creativity!

“Pale lemon green colour with silvery tinges. The nose is clean, showing reductive technology and low temperature vinification character with notes of melon and crunchy Granny Smith apple complimented by aniseed. The palate is dry, with high acidity and some phenolics, a digest and refreshing wine bringing a touch of pleasant bitterness on the finish, reminding the grapefruit peel.“

If you ever taste a good Kadarka, you will fall in love with it. Charming, full of spices, enchantingly fruity and tempts you to have another glass of it. Is it the frivolous grape? No, no! It does have serious ageing potential – in good hands. On Friday – 16 October – wine lovers will have a chance to taste several Kadarka and Kékfrankos wines in one place. Let’s revise the lesson of Kadarka and meet Tóth Ferenc Winery, Lajver Wine estate and Dúzsi Family Estate Kadarka wines.

The “Turkish grape”

“Kadarka is said to have been introduced to Hungary from the Balkans, either by Serbians, which fits with Kadarka being the Slavic name for Scutari, a lake (also known as Skadar) between Montenegro and Albania, and with the fact that the variety was once cultivated under the synonym Skadarka in Croatia and Serbia (Levadoux 1956; Galet 2000; Rohály et al. 2003), or by Turks, hence its synonym Törökszőlő (‘Turkish grape’). It is conceivable that it made its way to Hungary via Bulgaria, where it is still widely planted under the synonym Gamza, and where it is considered to be indigenous. It is also said to be indigenous to the region of Miniş / Ménes near Arad in western Romania, where the first sweet Aszú-style red wine was made from shrivelled Cadarcă grapes in 1744 (Dejeu 2004). The exact origin of Kadarka remains unknown but it lies somewhere within the Balkan-Pannonian area.” Excerpt From: Robinson, Jancis; Harding, Julia; Vouillamoz, Jose. “Wine Grapes (9780062325518).” iBooks.

Kadarka feels good with us

Wherever it came from, Kadarka feels really good in Hungary, it is grown almost all over the country. It has significant vineyards in the Great Hungarian Plain, where Kunság, Csongrád and Hajós–Baja wine regions are situated. Kadarka is most important in Szekszárd and Eger, the two wine regions where the famous blend, Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) is made, and Kadarka is usually one component of the blend. Total plantings of Kadarka account for less than 700 hectares, partially because it is really hard to cultivate Kadarka. Late ripening, sensitive, its thin skin can be affected with harmful and noble rot. The colour is medium deep ruby. On the nose rich, spicy and elegant – if in good hands. On the palate juicy, spicy, medium bodied with good acidity and low tannins. Usually consumed young, within 1–3 years, but with properly restricted yield and careful vinification Kadarka can be aged for a long time – as it is proved by some vertical tastings carried on in Szekszárd and other wine regions.

Silvery Superior Kadarka

Egri Kadarka Superior 2018 by Tóth Ferenc Winery has recently won silver medal at Decanter World Wine Award. It is the first superior Kadarka wine of the winery. Grapes came from Tihamer Cru and thanks to ideal yield controlthe result is a nice, concentrated wine that brings all characteristic features of the variety. Fermentation in stainless steel tank, maceration for 15 days with pump over. After pressing 2 weeks settling then ageing in 20 hl barrels for 9 months. Decanter jury commented: “Lovely red cherry aromatics with some spicy notes with a touch of black pepper. Crunchy acid structure and firm tannins.”

Best Buy champion

Lajver Wine Estate makes amazing, fruit driven wines at reasonable prices. Thanks to the state of art vinification plant the wines are crystal clear, balanced, harmonious and elegant. For Lajver Szekszárdi Kadarka 2019 the selected Kadarka bunches fermented in 500 L vats with manual punching over. Maturation took place in stainless steel tank to capture acidity. The wine features the typical characteristics of the variety: red fruits and spiciness on the nose and the palate. The vibrant acidity lingers along with the long aftertaste. And it costs only 4 euros!

Fruit of old vines

Dúzsi Szekszárdi Kadarka 2019 comes from the same wine region as the above described Lajver, however it shows a different face of the variety. The grapes came from very old vines, and after open vat fermentation (in large, 10 HL vats) the wine matured in open barrel. The nose show red and black berry fruits and besides some subtle tobacco notes appear as well. This spicy, complex Kadarka pairs well with hearty autumn dishes.
